Academic and policy circles are increasingly preoccupied with understanding the patterns of global inequality, its causes, consequences, and potential remedies. It is generally agreed that, while between-country inequality remains significant, it has been decreasing in recent years. Within-country inequality, on the other hand, is found to be on the rise in a large number of societies, in both economically developed and developing ones (Bourguignon, 2015, Milanovic, 2016, Nolan et al., 2014). Discussion on the sources of inequality most frequently refers to globalization and economic liberalization, technological advances, and international labour migration. In his book entitled Ethnic stratification and economic inequality around the world: the end of exploitation and exclusion Max Haller, in collaboration with Anja Eder, offers a rigorously built theoretical explanation for existing and increasing levels of inequality throughout the world. The opening argument in Haller’s book is that there is a lack of scholarly work concerning the origins and mechanisms behind the within-country economic disparity. In his view, the key variable in understanding the persistence and growth of economic disparities is ethnic differentiation within the societies.
