Protected and conversed areas in a changing world
Much has changed in the ambition for and challenges to protected and conserved areas since the last IUCN World Parks Congress in 2014. As such, the IUCN World Protected and Conserved Areas Congress 2027 (WPC27) will be a critical milestone for global conservation, arriving at a time of ecological urgency and profound societal shifts. WPC27 will be organised around three integrated themes, each designed for their transformative potential: 1) Globa…
Clarifying ‘long-term’ for protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (Oecms)
The concept of ‘long-term’ is a key part of the definitions of both protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). Draft principles for OECMs in Australia developed by the Australian Government propose a minimum period for OECMs of 25 years, where a landholder is not able to commit to in-perpetuity conservation. The proposal suggests this is consistent with IUCN Guidelines for Privately Protected Areas. As authors o…

Trends in protected and conserved areas
In 2022, two major regional congresses on protected and conserved areas, the 2nd Asia Parks Congress and the inaugural IUCN Africa Protected Areas Congress, were convened in Sabah, Malaysia and Rwanda, respectively. These well-attended and highly inclusive congresses were significant milestones for setting regional priorities for the next decade, and for preparing for CBD COP15, highlighting conservation successes, challenges and opportunities and…
Reframing the problem and solutions
A dozen short essays in the form of personal reflections by distinguished people, the authors of which were all asked to consider the deeper implications of the pandemic and its significance for humanity's relationship with nature. The authors include former Presidents of two countries, two Nobel prize winners, two former Presidents of IUCN, several leading academics, and leaders of international conventions, national and international NGOs, Indi…
PPA or Oecm? Differentiating between privately protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures on private land
Private land conservation has an increasingly important role in ensuring global conservation networks are comprehensive, adequate and representative. To contribute to the Convention on Biological Diversity's Aichi Target 11, areas on private land must be either privately protected areas (PPAs) or 'other effective area-based conservation measures' (OECMs) on private land. Here we compare PPAs to OECMs on private land, clarify misconceptions and pr…
Privately protected areas
Privately protected areas (PPAs) are increasingly recognized as important conservation initiatives, as evidenced by recent developments that support recognizing and documenting them alongside protected areas under other governance types. Advances in guidance on PPAs have been accompanied by increasing support within international policy arenas, and more PPAs are being reported to the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA). Despite this, nationa…
