  • Scientific Method and Reproducibility of Results

    Harvey F Dingman•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1969

Statistical significance is not part of the scientific method. The three canons of reproducibility of an experiment: Data Matrix Homegeneity, Subject Generalizability, and Method Generalizability provide better guides to experimentation and theory development. As adjuncts to Scientific Method they provide a better basis for evaluation of statistical findings

  • The Semantic Differential as a Tool for Measuring Progress in Therapy

    Open Access•Harvey F Dingman, Morris J Paulson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

Progress through therapy can be evaluated by a factor analysis of responses to a semantic rating scale over occasions. Methodology is presented which offers a technique for measuring objectively a patient's progress under therapy

  • Erosion of Morale in Resocialization of Pedophiles

    Open Access•Harvey F Dingman, Louise V Frisbie et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

Successive sets of ratings given to a group of pedophiles revealed a downward trend in the ratings of their actual and their ideal selves. This seeming erosion in morale during 1 yr. suggests a potential for recidivism

  • Patterns of Affective Responses in Two Groups of Pedophiles

    Open Access•Frank J Vanasek, Louise V Frisbie et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1968

A sample of 143 persons who were on probation or parole who had a history of child molesting were selected and compared with a sample of 215 pedophiles who were selected from a large state hospital. They were then compared on the basis of rating scales for 25 word pairs which were similar to words used by Osgood, et al. (1957) in the study of the semantic differential. The factors derived from the ratings of pedophiles in the community reflected …

  • The Self and the Ideal Self

    Open Access•Louise V Frisbie, Frank J Vanasek et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

Ratings of the self and of the ideal self were obtained from 215 institutionalized child molesters and 143 child molesters who were living in the community. The discrepancy between the two ratings of the self is seen to be related to the descriptive terms used to depict the self Words that are clearly evaluative in nature did not lead to discrepancies in the two ratings. Words that were descriptive but nonevaluative gave rise to large differences…

  • Comparison of Empirical Learning Curves in Programmed Instruction at Different Ability Levels

    Open Access•Harvey F Dingman, Robert B McIntyre et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

Reanalysis of data for individual and group learning curves of mental retardates supported the relevance of intelligence and past experience in learning

  • Anxiety, Physical Attractiveness, and Likeability of Personality in Mental Retardates

    Open Access•Lindsey Churchill, Harvey F Dingman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

The hypothesis that female admissions to a hospital for the mentally retarded should be more deviant among females in general (on factors other than IQ) than male admissions are among males in general is studied in more detail. Cross-classifying the sample by sex and IQ, the hypothesis is generally supported for manifest anxiety and physical attractiveness but not for likeability of personality. Some speculative comments are made about the two em…

  • General Response Tendencies and Parental Attitudes in the Mothers of Mentally Retarded Children

    Open Access•A B Silverstein, Harvey F Dingman•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

The Parental Attitude Research Instrument (PARI) was administered to 96 women whose children were candidates for placement in a state institution for the mentally retarded. Ss were divided into two groups of equal size: mothers of the severely retarded and mothers of the mildly retarded. The latter group initially obtained significantly higher scores on 15 of the 23 PARI scales. However, when Bell's procedure for isolating the elevation and scatt…

  • Determining Weights for Composite Ratings by Factor Analysis

    Open Access•Harvey F Dingman, R B Mc Intyre•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1962

In a paper entitled, A new method for obtaining weighted composites of racings (Dingman & Guilford, 1954), a formula was developed for obtaining the weighted composite effectiveness rating for employees in a situation where not all raters knew all employees and where the intercorrelations of the raters were distinctly different from unity. This formula, AI, = (PAlr. Fk X,k)/(\'A,k Fk) [I I where Xik = rating of effectiveness of individual I given…
