Marine Organic Carbon and Radiocarbon—present and Future Challenges
We discuss present and developing techniques for studying radiocarbon in marine organic carbon (C). Bulk DOC (dissolved organic C) Δ 14 C measurements reveal information about the cycling time and sources of DOC in the ocean, yet they are time consuming and need to be streamlined. To further elucidate the cycling of DOC, various fractions have been separated from bulk DOC, through solid phase extraction of DOC, and ultrafiltration of high and low…
UV Photochemical Oxidation and Extraction of Marine Dissolved Organic Carbon at UC Irvine
The first ultraviolet photochemical oxidation (UVox) extraction method for marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) as CO 2 gas was established by Armstrong and co-workers in 1966. Subsequent refinement of the UVox technique has co-evolved with the need for high-precision isotopic (Δ 14 C, δ 13 C) analysis and smaller sample size requirements for accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) measurements. The UVox line at UC Irvine was establ…
Optimized Volume Determinations and Uncertainties for Accurate and Precise Manometry
Precise manometric pressure, volume, and temperature (P-V-T) measurements of carbon in samples, standards, and blanks are critical for radiocarbon studies. While P and T uncertainties depend on instrument choice and environmental stability, V uncertainties depend on their method of measurement and are often overlooked. We used numerical simulations and error propagation to find optimum procedures for measuring “cold-finger” volumes equipped with …
A Note on Reporting of Reservoir 14 C Disequilibria and Age Offsets
Reservoir age offsets are widely used to correct marine and speleothem radiocarbon age measurements for various calibration purposes. They also serve as a powerful tracer for carbon cycle dynamics. However, a clear terminology regarding reservoir age offsets is lacking, sometimes leading to miscalculations. This note seeks to provide consistent conventions for reporting reservoir 14 C disequilibria useful to a broad range of environmental science…
A High-Throughput, Low-Cost Method for Analysis of Carbonate Samples for 14 C
The National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NOSAMS) facility at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution has developed an automated system for high-throughput, low-cost analysis of radiocarbon in carbonate samples (e.g. corals, carbonaceous sediments, speleothems, etc.). The method bypasses graphitization and pretreatment, and reduces costs to about 1/5th the price of a graphite-based 14 C carbonate analysis, with a throughput of 6…
Distribution of Radiocarbon Ages in Soil Organic Matter by Thermal Fractionation
Radiocarbon analysis is an important tool in quantifying soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics within the terrestrial carbon cycle. However, there is increasing appreciation that representing SOM as a single, homogeneous pool with a single, mean 14 C concentration is inadequate. We investigate whether the differing patterns in CO 2 release during ramped-temperature oxidation reflect organic matter of different ages, and hypothesize that thermally la…
An Alternate Method of Diluting Dissolved Organic Carbon Seawater Samples for 14 C Analysis
We present a time-saving modification to the ultraviolet (UV) oxidation method for analyzing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, Δ 14 C, and δ 13 C measurements in seawater and standard materials. A low background (∼0.2 ± 0.2 μM) was reported for pre-irradiated Milli-Q (MQ) water that was used to dilute samples for DOC 14 C analysis (Beaupré et al. 2007). We use MQ water without pre-irradiation (background ∼0.9 ± 0.2 μM) to dilute the s…

Variability of Monthly Radiocarbon During the 1760S in Corals from the Galapagos Islands
Radiocarbon (Δ 14 C) measurements of monthly samples from a Galapagos surface coral are among the first data sets from the new Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometry laboratory at the University of California, Irvine. An average Δ 14 C value of −62 is obtained for 144 measurements of samples from monthly coral bands that lived from about AD 1760–1771 (±6 yr). High Δ 14 C values were found during January through March, when upwelling was …
