  • Radiocarbon and Stable Carbon Analysis of Dissolved Methane and Carbon Dioxide from the Profile of a Raised Peat Bog

    Open Access•M H Garnett, S M L Hardie et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 23

We developed and tested a new method to separate CO 2 and CH 4 from bulk gas samples for radiocarbon and stable-carbon analysis that utilizes a zeolite molecular sieve. To validate the technique, tests were performed using a suite of standard gases, composed of CO 2 and CH 4 of distinctly different isotopic composition. We employed the method to investigate the carbon isotopic composition of samples of dissolved CO 2 and CH 4 collected in situ fr…

  • Spatial Variability of Bomb 14 C in an Upland Peat Bog

    Open Access•S M L Hardie, M H Garnett et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 28

As part of a study investigating the carbon balance of a blanket bog, we made an assessment of the spatial variation of radiocarbon concentrations in the surface layers of a small area of peatland in the north of England. The peat depth at which bomb- 14 C content was the highest varied considerably between cores sampled from across the site. At several sampling locations, 14 C levels >100% Modern were confined to the surface 8 cm, whereas bomb 1…

  • A Direct Method to Measure 14 CO 2 Lost by Evasion from Surface Waters

    Open Access•M F Billett, M H Garnett et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 23

Recent methodological advances in the use of zeolite molecular sieves for measuring the isotopic signature of CO 2 have provided the opportunity to make direct measurements of 14 CO2 in various field situations. We linked a portable molecular sieve/pump/IRGA system to a floating chamber to demonstrate the potential of the method to quantify the isotopic signature (δ 13 C and 14 C) of CO 2 lost by evasion (outgassing) from surface waters. The syst…

  • Carbon Dioxide Capture Using a Zeolite Molecular Sieve Sampling System for Isotopic Studies ( 13 C and 14 C) of Respiration

    Open Access•S M L Hardie, M H Garnett et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2005•Cited by: 10•References: 30

A method for collecting an isotopically representative sample of CO 2 from an air stream using a zeolite molecular sieve is described. A robust sampling system was designed and developed for use in the field that includes reusable molecular sieve cartridges, a lightweight pump, and a portable infrared gas analyzer (IRGA). The system was tested using international isotopic standards ( 13 C and 14 C). Results showed that CO 2 could be trapped and r…
