  • The Mesolithic of the Jászság

Open Access•Kristóf István Szegedi, András Gulyás et al.•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2024

The ‘Jászság Mesolithic’ is almost iconic in Hungarian research on prehistory because of the abundance of the sites associated with early Holocene hunter-gatherers discovered there since the late 1980s. At these sites, lithic industries unequivocally connected with the Mesolithic and characterised by geometric microliths were found, refuting the ‘Mesolithic hiatus’ theory. Unfortunately, the wave of successful research slowed down after the 2000s…

  • Archaeological Research of the Ottoman Palace in Szolnok

    Open Access•Róbert Kertész, Balázs Szőke•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2024

The Ottomans occupied Szolnok, a town by the Tisza River in the Great Hungarian Plain, in 1552, little more than a decade after conquering Buda. In the following period, it has become a major sanjak (sancak) seat in the northernmost Buda vilayet of the Ottoman Empire. Its administrative position changed in 1596, following the occupation of Eger, when it became part of the Eger pasalik and remained there until the Hungarian armies recaptured it in…

  • Theoretical reconstruction of the Ottoman palace in Szolnok

    Open Access•Róbert Kertész, Balázs Szőke•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2024

The architectural results of the archaeological excavation of the large, rectangular, eastwest oriented Ottoman palace, measuring approximately 18.5×9.0 m, identified in 2018 in the centre of the Early Modern Age castle of Szolnok, were presented in the previous issue of Hungarian Archaeology. This palisaded, representative, two-storey building with two wings, which stood from the second half of the 16th century until 1685/1687 and was built in a…

  • A jászsági mezolitikum

Open Access•Kristóf István Szegedi, András Gulyás et al.•ARTICLE•Magyar Régészet•2024

A „jászsági mezolitikum” szinte ikonikus fogalom a magyarországi ősrégészeti kutatásban, hiszen az 1980-as évek végétől az első hitelesen kutatott és dokumentált, a kora holocén vadász-gyűjtögető közösségekhez köthető lelőhelyek itt kerültek elő. Ezeken a lelőhelyeken a mezolitikumhoz biztosan kötődő, geometrikus mikrolitokkal jellemezhető pattintott kőiparokat fedeztek fel, amelyek alapján újra kellett értelmezni a korábbi évtizedekben széles kö…

  • A szolnoki oszmán palota régészeti kutatása

  • A szolnoki oszmán palota elméleti rekonstrukciója

    Open Access•Róbert Kertész, Balázs Szőke•ARTICLE•Magyar Régészet•2024

A kora újkori szolnoki vár központjában 2018-ban azonosított, nagyméretű, kb. 18,5×9 m-es, téglalap alaprajzú, kelet-nyugati tájolású oszmán palota régészeti ásatásának építészeti eredményeit a Magyar Régészet előző számában (https://doi.org/10.36245/ mr.2024.2.3) ismertettük. A palánkkal övezett, a 16. század második fele és 1685/1687 között fennállt, jellegzetes oszmán-balkáni építéstechnikával készült, reprezentatív, kéttraktusú, emeletes épül…

  • Late Palaeolithic to Early Mesolithic transition in the Carpathian Basin

    Open Access•Attila Király, Róbert Kertész•ARTICLE•Communicationes Archaeologicae…•2023

Szekszárd-Palánk is one of the handful in situ excavated sites from the Late Glacial period of East-Central Europe which is also supported by radiometric dating. However, the considerable time that has passed since its discovery necessitates a revision, the topic of this paper. The technotypological analogues of the assemblage are Late Epigravettian – Early Mesolithic sites of the Northern Balkans to the south, and Epimagdalenian sites of the Mor…

  • The Mesolithic Research of a Decade

Open Access•Tibor Marton, Róbert Kertész et al.•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2021

Despite the promising research trends of the last decades, it is striking that traces of Mesolithic settlements have only rarely come to light in the Carpathian Basin so far. The area of Transdanubia is not an exception. With the cooperation of three institutes, a research program was launched in 2003 with the aim of discovering new find places of the period, as well as re-evaluating finds that had been taken to museums earlier and classified as …

A 2003. év során három intézmény együttműködésével kutatási program indult a korszak lelőhelyeinek vizsgálatára, amely a régebben múzeumokba került és mezolitikusnak tartott leletanyagok újraértékelése mellett új lelőhelyek felfedezésé…

  • Honfoglalás kori sír Tiszapüspöki határában

    István Fodor, Róbert Kertész•ARTICLE•Archaeologiai Értesítő•2015•References: 1

A female burial of the Conquest period came to light on the outskirts of Tiszapüspöki, a settlement lying north of Szolnok, during the salvage excavations preceding the construction of the M4 Motorway. The west to east oriented burial was disturbed by a ditch and during the mechanical humus removal. Lying beside the skeletal remains were a pair of tinned bronze braid ornaments, a bracelet of sheet bronze, beads, the fragment of an iron awl and a …

  • Combined Techniques to Date the First Turkish Bridge Over the Tisza River, Hungary

Open Access•Zsuzsanna Szántó, Róbert Kertész et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•References: 4

Given the fluctuating nature of the radiocarbon calibration curve, the precision of single 14 C dates on the calendar timescale is limited. However, 14 C dating combined with dendrochronology enabled us to date timbers found in the Tisza River, Hungary, during the dry period of summer 2003. Routine preparation of wood samples gave 14 C results spread over 4 centuries. By extracting alpha-cellulose from the samples, 2 distinct and relatively narro…
