  • Willy Wölfli (1930–2014)

Open Access•Hans‐arno Synal, Jürg Beer et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Looking back on Willy Wlfli's scientific achievements is not an easy task. However, to fully understand his remarkable contributions to AMS, one has to begin with a look at his professional career. Influenced by the worldwide crises of the 1930s and 1940s, which also left their mark on Switzerland, Willy Wlfli

  • Years of Cosmic Radiation and Solar Activity From Ice Cores and Tree Rings

Open Access•Friedhelm Steinhilber, Jose A Abreu et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2012

Understanding the temporal variation of cosmic radiation and solar activity during the Holocene is essential for studies of the solar-terrestrial relationship. Cosmic-ray produced radionuclides, such as 10 Be and 14 C which are stored in polar ice cores and tree rings, offer the unique opportunity to reconstruct the history of cosmic radiation and solar activity over many millennia. Although records from different archives basically agree, they a…

  • Anomalous Radiocarbon Ages Found in Campanian Ignimbrite Deposit of the Mediterranean Deep-Sea Core CT85-5

Open Access•I Hajdas, Carla Taricco et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 26

A detailed radiocarbon chronology has been established for the deep-sea core CT85-5 from the Tyrrhenian Sea. This chronology, which is based on the analysis of foraminifera shells, shows a set of reversed 14 C ages for sediments deposited during the eruption of the Campanian Ignimbrite (∼40 ka cal BP). The anomalous young 14 C ages coincide with elevated concentrations of 10 Bc measured in the same core. Although reversals in 14 C ages have been …

  • Mid- to Late Holocene climate change

Open Access•Heinz Wanner, Jürg Beer et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2008

  • Kilimanjaro Ice Core Records

    Open Access•Lonnie G Thompson, Ellen Mosley-Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2002

Six ice cores from Kilimanjaro provide an ∼11.7-thousand-year record of Holocene climate and environmental variability for eastern equatorial Africa, including three periods of abrupt climate change: ∼8.3, ∼5.2, and ∼4 thousand years ago (ka). The latter is coincident with the “First Dark Age,” the period of the greatest historically recorded drought in tropical Africa. Variable deposition of F – and Na + during the African Humid Period suggests …

  • C Dating of Terrestrial Moss in Tern Lake Deposits, Antarctica

Open Access•Chengde Shen, Tungsheng Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Accurate radiocarbon ages were obtained from terrestrial moss from two drill holes in Tern Lake deposits, Antarctica, using liquid scintillation counting (LSC) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). The results show that the lake deposits have been accumulating since the end of the last glacial epoch ca. 12,600 cal BP at the rate of 0.13–1.1 mm a -1 . We discuss the validity of 14 C ages of Antarctic lake deposits, with respect to the latitude …
