Geomorphology of the Axial Channel (Southern Bight, North Sea)
This study presents a transnational geomorphological map of the Southern Bight, North Sea, using bathymetric data (EMODnet – c. 115 m horizontal resolution; UKHO – 4 m horizontal resolution). Based on the erosional and/or depositional relationship of the mapped features, a first step is established towards the reconstruction of the evolution of the Axial Channel, i.e. a major geomorphological feature on the southern North Sea seafloor. It reveals…
From field data to model: Integration of onshore and offshore research to create a Digital Terrain Model of the Belgian coast around 6 ka BP for geoarchaeological research
Understanding coastal evolution requires a transdisciplinary approach, Connecting onshore and offshore findings, Creating a DTM enables testing long-standing geomorphological hypotheses
Targeting the Mesolithic: Interdisciplinary approaches to archaeological prospection in the Brown Bank area, southern North Sea
This paper describes some results of the research undertaken over the Brown Bank area during recent (2018/2019) geoarchaeological surveys in the North Sea which included seismic imaging, shallow (vibro)coring and dredging. It examines the benefits of simultaneous high-resolution (0.5 – 1 m) and ultra-high-resolution (10–20 cm) seismic survey techniques and a staged approach to resolving the submerged Holocene landscape in the highest possible det…
Belgium: Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology in the Intertidal and Subtidal Zones of the North Sea
The evidence for submerged prehistoric remains and landscapes in the Belgian sector of the North Sea is scarce. The majority of finds dredged and trawled from the seafloor consists of palaeontological material, notably mammalian bone remains, dating from the Early and Late Pleistocene, and possibly the Holocene. Scarce palaeontological and archaeological finds come from the intertidal zone. The available data are rather limited and strikingly spa…
Archaeological prospection of the nearshore and intertidal area using ultra‐high resolution marine acoustic techniques: Results from a test study on the Belgian coast at Ostend‐Raversijde
The coastal site of Ostend‐Raversijde in Belgium is known for its archaeological artifacts, mainly from Roman and medieval times. In recent years, detailed geophysical and geotechnical investigations have been carried out here to test the efficiency of these techniques for geoarchaeological prospection of the subtidal and intertidal zone. Very high‐resolution 2D subbottom profiling using a parametric echosounder evidenced a highly complex system …
A high-resolution DEM for the Top-Palaeogene surface of the Belgian Continental Shelf
A 1:250,000 scale map of the surface of the Top-Palaeogene for the Belgian Continental Shelf was created based on extensive analyses of older and recent geological and geophysical datasets. The Top-Palaeogene surface is an important polygenetic unconformity that truncates older strata of the Palaeogene and to a smaller extent some of Neogene age from the overlying Quaternary deposits. As such it represents the base of the latter. The represented …
Exploring Integrated Geophysics and Geotechnics as a Paleolandscape Reconstruction Tool: Archaeological Prospection of (Prehistoric) Sites Buried Deeply below the Scheldt Polders (NW Belgium)
During extensive construction works in Antwerp harbour, well preserved Late Glacial dune formations were discovered buried deeply below the Scheldt polders and covered by peat, organic matter (OM) rich clays and marine clayey to sandy sediments. First, coring based archaeological prospection strategies for evaluating prehistoric occupation levels in wetland landscapes are reviewed. Next, a more effective approach including near surface geophysica…
Reconstructing Early Neolithic Paleogeography: EMI‐Based Subsurface Modeling and Chronological Modeling of Holocene Peat below the Lower Scheldt Floodplain in NW Belgium
Well‐preserved prehistoric landscapes and sites have been found, buried deeply below the Holocene peat or floodplain deposits of “Waasland Scheldt polders.” During the mid‐to‐late Holocene, Late Weichselian (river) dunes within the floodplain and river flanks were favored locations for Final Early Neolithic occupation. Available living space was determined by the dune topography and elevation of the peat at that time. Therefore, an elevation mode…
Potential of cone penetrating testing for mapping deeply buried palaeolandscapes in the context of archaeological surveys in polder areas
Chronology of Wetland Hydrological Dynamics and the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition along the Lower Scheldt: A Bayesian Approach
The Mesolithic-Neolithic transition in the wetland margins of the southern North Sea basin occurred well over a millennium after the transition in neighboring loess regions. This article investigates the possible role of hydrological dynamics in the presence of the last hunter-gatherer-fishermen in these wetland regions. A Bayesian modeling approach is used to integrate stratigraphic information and radiocarbon dates both from accurately datable …
