  • Changing the Guard

    Brian Shoesmith•ARTICLE•Media History•2009

This paper examines the 1940s as a key decade to understanding the history of the Indian cinema. It takes as its focus the studio system created in the major cities and how they dealt with a number of common issues. It argues that the studio system in India was diverse and complex, shaped by cultural and linguistic factors and it can only be understood through its response to these issues, which are identified as dealing with government bureaucra…

The cinema provides an alternative space for 'the reshaping of the public domain'.1 In considering the role of Hindi popular films in articulating the Hindu Right-wing agenda, we will argue that, while popular cinema has increasingly employed a militant version of Hindu nationalism over the last two decades, it has always contained the seeds of this agenda, especially in the mythological genre. In so doing, we note how film's impact is felt throu…

This paper is an attempt to look at aspects of representation of the elderly in Malayalam cinema, which is one of the significant regional language cinemas of India. The representation of the elderly in cinema has not attracted much academic and media attention. This is evident in the lack of entries relating to the subject on the World Wide Web and associated academic databases. By contrast, 'women in cinema', and 'youth in cinema' produce a con…
