  • Rapid bottom-water circulation changes during the last glacial cycle in the coastal low-latitude NE Atlantic

    Open Access•David Gallego-Torres, Oscar E Romero et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

Previous paleoceanographic studies along the NW African margin focused on the dynamics of surface and intermediate waters, whereas little attention has been devoted to deep-water masses. Currently, these deep waters consist mainly of North Atlantic Deep Waters as part of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). However, this configuration was altered during periods of AMOC collapse. We present a high-resolution reconstruction of bo…

  • Millennial- to centennial-scale climate periodicities and forcing mechanisms in the westernmost Mediterranean for the past 20,000 yr

    Open Access•Marta Rodrigo-Gámiz, Marta Rodrigo‐Gámiz et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

Cyclostratigraphic analysis conducted on a continuous high-resolution marine record from the western most Mediterranean reveals well-identified paleoclimate cycles for the last 20,000 yr. The detrital proxies used (Si/Al, Ti/Al, Zr/Al, Mg/Al, K/Al, Rb/Al) are related to different sediment-transport mechanisms, including eolian dust and fluvial runoff, which involve fluctuations in the atmosphere–hydrosphere systems. These fluctuations are accompa…

  • Climate imprints during the ‘Medieval Climate Anomaly’ and the ‘Little Ice Age’ in marine records from the Alboran Sea basin

    Open Access•Vanesa Nieto-Moreno, Francisca Martínez‐Ruiz et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 7

An integrated multiproxy analysis from westernmost Mediterranean hemipelagic sediments has provided further insights into natural climate variability and forcing mechanisms in this region during the last two millennia. Two deep-sea marine records, with a robust age model provided by the activity–depth profiles of 210 Pb and 137 Cs, together with 14 C dating, allowed us to perform a detailed reconstruction of paleoenvironmental and paleoceanograph…

  • The Mesolithic–Neolithic transition in southern Iberia

Open Access•Miguel Cortés Sánchez, Francisco J Jiménez Espejo et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

New data and a review of historiographic information from Neolithic sites of the Malaga and Algarve coasts (southern Iberian Peninsula) and from the Maghreb (North Africa) reveal the existence of a Neolithic settlement at least from 7.5 cal ka BP. The agricultural and pastoralist food producing economy of that population rapidly replaced the coastal economies of the Mesolithic populations. The timing of this population and economic turnover coinc…

  • Gorham's Cave, Gibraltar—The persistence of a Neanderthal population

    Open Access•Clive Finlayson, Darren A Fa et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2007•Cited by: 70•References: 6
