Paleoecology of the late Pleistocene avifauna from Marlera (Istria, Croatia) with notes on the voles record
The Eastern Adriatic Coast, owing to its karstic nature, features numerous Quaternary cave sites that mostly date to the Pleniglacial - Late Glacial or Holocene (Marine Isotope Stages 2–1). In this paper, we present a well-preserved small-vertebrate assemblage from the Marlera fossil-cave site (southern Istrian Peninsula), dated to Marine Isotope Stage 3. Taxonomical and paleoecological analyses were conducted on bird and arvicoline assemblages. …
First Find of Hippopotamus cf. amphibius in the Quaternary of Bosnia and Herzegovina
The discovery of hippopotamid remain from a cave near the village of Grebci, Bosnia and Herzegovina, represents the first confirmed record of Hippopotamus in this part of southeastern Europe. The specimen, a partially preserved right os coxae, is housed at the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum. Morphological and metric analyses identify it as Hippopotamus cf. amphibius, although its fragmentary state prevents a more precise taxonomic attribution, …
Mammoths, Deer, and a Dog
Eight anatomically and taxonomically different finds are presented in this paper, and they belong to four taxa: woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus), red deer (Cervus elaphus), and dog (Canis familiaris). All specimens represent allochthonous Late Pleistocene and Holocene animal remains, and all were dredged during the gravel exploitation at the Sekuline site near Molve (Podravina region, SW Pannonian basin, …
Quaternary fauna of the Eastern Adriatic (Croatia) with the special review on the Late Pleistocene sites
Bank vole Myodes (=Clethrionomys) glareolus (Schreber, 1780)
The Avifauna of Southern Istria (Croatia) During the Late Pleistocene
This paper presents palaeoecological and taphonomic analyses of bird remains from Late Pleistocene sediments from two caves in southern Istria, Šandalja II and Ljubićeva pećina. Most of the identified species are found today in Istria and along the Adriatic coast, although the presence of ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) and willow grouse (L. lagopus) indicates colder conditions than those characteristic of the region today. Taxa from both sites are cha…
Miocene to Late Pleistocene proboscideans of Croatia
Archaeological, Paleontological and Genomic Perspectives on Late European Neandertals at Vindija Cave, Croatia
Last glacial climates, “Refugia”, and faunal change in Southeastern Europe
The Middle Paleolithic from Mujina Pećina, Dalmatia, Croatia
Mujina Pećina in Dalmatia, Croatia is the only systematically excavated and well-dated Middle Paleolithic cave site in the eastern Adriatic. Its stratigraphic sequence covers the period between 45 and 39 uncalibrated years ka. Results of sedimentological, lithic, faunal, and paleobotanical analyses of the upper levels (Levels B, C, D1, and D2) show that this was a hunting site only sporadically visited by humans. During these occupation episodes …
