The Patronage of the Vizier Mirza Salman
While previously published manuscripts hinted at Mirza Salman's interest in such works, two recently discovered manuscripts better show the full extent of the vizier's patronage. They reveal how his early association with Sultan Ibrahim Mirza had already induced him to emulate his prince in commissioning illustrated manuscripts, albeit on a more modest scale—and how he quickly decided to step into the shoes of Ibrahim Mirza and act as a true mirz…
Astyages, Cyrus and Zoroaster
Casting Darius as a descendant of the Achaemenid main line of kings, and Cyrus as one belonging to a secondary branch, Franpois Vallat has argued that Darius's contempt for his paternal cousin stemmed from the perception that Cyrus usurped his forefather's title and position. As it happens, it parallels my own theory by which I had explained that Darius’ kingly ideology reflected his antagonism toward the Median ideology. Whereas Vallat sees Cyru…
Looking through The Two Eyes of the Earth
Matthew Canepa's recent study of the cultural and political interactions between Rome and Sasanian Iran, has provided an opportunity to reassess Sasanian rock reliefs in light of the claims and counter claims between these two empires. Since victory over Romans meant a victory over an-Erān, and generated the most potent of all farrs, i.e. the Aryan farr, many rock reliefs were conceived to show its reflection on the king. What is most interesting…
The Formation of Achaemenid Imperial Ideology and Its Impact on the Avesta
The Vocabulary and Syntax of Iconography in Sasanian Iran
The purpose of this paper is to establish that Sasanian functionaries had to develop a sophisticated iconographical language to propagate a political propa- ganda aimed at a mostly illiterate population. This iconographical language not only complements the written word, but stands on its own merits in shedding some light on information not easily understood in texts. It also provides a testing ground for the interpretation of complex slogans and…
Le Chant Du Monde
The catalogue of a major Safavid exhibition at the Louvre, written by Assadollah Souren Melikian-Chirvani, seems to be primarily aimed at contradicting established art history theories. Unfortunately, most of its author's contentions are based on the erroneous reading of Persian texts and false assumptions. The aim of this article is to try to prevent the readers of that catalogue being misguided by incorrect information
In Defense of Rasid-od-Din and His Letters

The Concepts of ' al-Aqdamo Aṣaḥḥ ' and ' Yaqin-e Sābeq ', and the Problem of Semi-fakes
Between the Safavids and the Mughals
In the year 1544, the Mughal emperor Humāyūn (r. 1530-40 and 1555-56) came to the Safavid court seeking Shāh Tahmāsb I's help to recapture his kingdom. Tahmāsb (r. 1524-76) obliged and Humāyūn eventually recovered his throne. The political consequences of the Safavid encounter notwithstanding, Humāyūn's visit is mostly remembered as a fortuitous event that launched the development of the Mughal school of painting. From an art historical perspecti…
