  • Accounting for Dignity in the Iliad, Ajax, Electra, and the Clinical Encounter

    Jan Parker•ARTICLE•Literature and medicine•2020

This essay explores as "dignity-denuding" case studies Greek tragic protagonists in order to discuss the ethical problematics involved in "accounting for" such figures: i.e. both diagnosing them and constructing (broken) narratives into which they are fitted. Starting with epic's positive constructions of "aidōs" (shame), it contrasts Ajax and Phaedra-each deprived of their dignity by what one psychiatrist called a "violent storm"-as seeking to c…

  • Stories, narratives, scenarios in Medicine

    Open Access•Jan Parker•ARTICLE•Arts and Humanities in Higher…•2018

This Medical Humanities Special Issue critiques and reflects on narrative practices around medical, psychiatric and trauma care. • Something adequate’? In memoriam Seamus Heaney, Sister Quinlan, Nirbhaya

    Open Access•Jan Parker•ARTICLE•Arts and Humanities in Higher…•2014•References: 1

Seamus Heaney talked of poetry's responsibility to represent the ‘bloody miracle’, the ‘terrible beauty’ of atrocity; to create ‘something adequate’. This article asks, what is adequate to the burning and eating of a nun and the murderous gang rape and evisceration of a medical student? It considers Njabulo Ndebele's answer: the retelling of the story in the service of ‘love and politics’, and that of the South African playwright, Yael Farber, wh…

  • Tradition, Translation, Trauma

Janet Parker, Jan Parker et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Tradition, translation, trauma•2011

This book is concerned with how Classic texts — mainly Greek and Latin but also Arabic and Portuguese — become present in later cultures and how they resonate in the modern. This book examines the topic in different ways. Some discuss singular encounters with the Classic — those of Heaney, Pope, Fellini, Freud, IbnQutayba, Cavafy and others — and show how translations engage with the affective impact of texts over time and space. Chapters offer i…

The Humanities have much to offer 21st-century Europe, in terms of both method and issues which may complement and correct those of Science and Social Science. These include, for instance, humanities' generation of plural narratives and plural explanations, of attention to singularity and complexity, and to others' sensibilities and ways of knowing. These disciplines provide higher order skills needed to engage and engage with the New Europe — rh…
