Using two household account books, this article analyses the family and staff, travel, consumption and flamboyance of the merchant-aristocratic household of the Loitz family in the 1570s. The Peso or the Marsilie—The Standard Currency Unit of the Armenian New Julfa Merchants?
This article rests upon a merchant’s handbook authored by the ecclesiastical scholar Lukas of Vanand which he published in Amsterdam in 1669. The handbook contains a rich level of insight into “ marsilie ”—coins from Marseille—denoted as pesos de ocho reales in Armenian commercial parlance. Vanand’s handbook reveals the significance of Marseilles coins within Armenian trade, detailing the coin’s trading locations and exchange rates. Pesos were co…
The Hamburg Marine Insurance, 1736–1859
Since 1736, Hamburg's price current consistently listed the marine insurance premiums of the Hanseatic Town as well as of many other European ports. Based on the long-term analysis of these quotations over the course of about 120 years, this book sheds light on the factors of influence (such as weather conditions, wars and piracy, to name a few) which interfered with European and intercontinental maritime trade. The cause of the long-term decline…
Die Hamburger Seeversicherung vom 17. bis zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts
Hamburg’s marine insurance from the 17th to the middle of the 19th century In the eighteenth century, Hamburg emerged as the third-most important marine insurance market in North-West Europe, after Amsterdam and London, with an impact in the entire Baltic Sea area, but partially in ports along the Atlantic coast and in the Mediterranean as well. On the basis of selected examples this contribution outlines the long-term development of marine insur…

In this context this paper would like to develop an initial model of resiliencing or resilience management in history which shall be put up for discussion. Thereby, the following questions should be answered: How can an enterprise be made resilient? And how can resilience management be analysed in a business historical or microecono…

Der seewärtige Einfuhrhandel Hamburgs nach den Admiralitäts- und Convoygeld-Einnahmebüchern (1733–1798)
Throughout the eighteenth century, the Entry Books of the Admiralty and Convoy Duties of Hamburg are the central serial source for German seaward import trade, which was executed, if not entirely, then at least for a large part, in Hamburg. In this paper, the origins and central content of this source is outlined first. Then, a general overview of the source base is carried out employing the goods of trade, ports and regions of origin as central …
Das Maklerwesen auf den Bozner Messen im 18. Jahrhundert
Brokers were crucial to all pre-industrial economies and societies, especially within the premodern system of markets, trade fairs and stock exchanges, where they arranged cashless payments and goods transactions, as well as the exchange of information. Moreover, as an economic institution they acted as an adjustment factor for the financial and goods market. This holds true especially for the Bolzano Fairs, which lay at the crossroads between th…
