  • Historical Geoarchaeological Sourcing of the Sandstone Stairs at Colonial Stratford Hall, Virginia

    Open Access•Marcus M Key, Elizabeth M McCreary•ARTICLE•Historical Archaeology•2026

The goal of this study is to determine the geological character and source of the exterior stone stairs that once ascended to the south entry at Stratford Hall on the Potomac River in Virginia. The intent is to clarify the date and physical history of these stairs by determining their geologic source. Built for Thomas Lee beginning in 1738, the hall was restored in 1929–1940. At that time the stairs of the south entrance were red sandstone. These…

  • Sourcing the Early Colonial Knight’s Black “Marble” Tombstone at Jamestown, Virginia, USA

    Open Access•Marcus M Key, Rebecca K Rossi•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 12

The goal of this project was to determine the source of Jamestown’s black “marble” knight’s tombstone. From 1627, it is the oldest such tombstone in the Chesapeake Bay region. We used the fossils contained in archived fragments from the stone to identify its microfossils which included six species of foraminiferans. These co-occurred in what is now Belgium and Ireland during the Viséan Age, Middle Mississippian Epoch, Carboniferous Period. They d…

  • Historical Geoarchaeological Approach to Sourcing Seventeenth- to Eighteenth-Century Black “Marble” Ledger Stones from the Chesapeake Bay Region, U.S.A

  • Response to comment on Ward et al.’s ‘Insights into the procurement and distribution of fossiliferous chert artefacts across southern Australia from the archival record’

    Ian Ward, Michael O''Leary et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•2021•References: 6

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to the arguments put forward by Bird et al. against the premise of a long-distance source and trade of bryozoan fossiliferous chert across southern Australi

  • Synchrotron X-ray tomographic imaging of embedded fossil invertebrates in Aboriginal stone artefacts from Western Australia: Implications for sourcing, distribution and chronostratigraphy

  • Insights into the procurement and distribution of fossiliferous chert artefacts across southern Australia from the archival record

    Ian Ward, Marcus M Key et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 22

Following from previous research in Western Australia, this study explores the use of embedded microfossils—including bryozoan and foraminiferal fossil assemblages—to help identify source and distribution of fossiliferous chert artefacts from South Australian archives. Artefacts from key archaeological sites include Allen’s Cave, Koonalda Cave, Wilson’s Bluff, Ooldea and Kongarong. Preliminary analyses indicate a possible differentiation of fossi…

  • Use of Fossil Bryozoans in Sourcing Lithic Artifacts

    Open Access•Marcus M Key, Patrick N Wyse Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 14

This study reviews the occurrence and potential of bryozoans within lithic artifacts and also sets out a methodology for their use in sourcing and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of this approach. We present case studies from our own research and from the literature on using bryozoans in sourcing archaeological lithic artifacts. Fossil bryozoans of different ages and clades can be effectively used to determine the material source of li…

  • Controls, variation, and a record of climate change in detailed stable isotope record in a single bryozoan skeleton

    Open Access•Abigail M Smith, Marcus M Key•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2004

The long-lived (about 20 yr) bryozoan Adeonellopsis sp. from Doubtful Sound, New Zealand, precipitates aragonite in isotopic equilibrium with seawater, exerting no metabolic or kinetic effects. Oxygen isotope ratios (δ 18 O) in 61 subsamples (along three branches of a single unaltered colony) range from −0.09 to +0.68‰ PDB (mean = +0.36‰ PDB). Carbon isotope ratios (δ 13 C) range from +0.84 to +2.18‰ PDB (mean = +1.69‰ PDB). Typical of cool-water…
