Ritual artefacts are reported in most archaeological excavations from the Epipalaeolithic period of the Levant onwards. However, the topic of ritual remains a contentious issue in archaeology, especially regarding what it means for an artefact to be labelled as ritual. On the one hand, there is a pervasive sense that there is a shared, largely implicit, idea of what is expected from such artefacts. On the other hand, there is extensive archaeolog…

  • From Inalienable Possessions to Magic

    Open Access•Milena Gošić•ARTICLE•Etnoantropološki problemi /…•2025

There is a great variety of symbol-laden objects in the late Chalcolithic period (ca. 4300-3900 BC). In the past, they have been interpreted mostly as designators of social status and evidence of social hierarchy. The present paper discusses this heterogeneity and the use of symbol-laden objects through the concept of inalienable possessions defined by Annette Weiner. The symbolism of these objects makes them socially valuable. It dictates their …

The case study of Chalcolithic copper metallurgy in the Southern Levant is compared to patte…

  • Temples in the Ghassulian Culture

    Open Access•Milena Gošić•ARTICLE•Etnoantropološki problemi /…•2016

Archaeological discussions on prehistoric ritual are largely concerned with their material remains, including architectural debris. The first step in interpretation of such remains is their precise identification and categorization. There are numerous terms for objects and architectural remains that are widely utilized in the archaeological jargon, including, but not limited to, the terms temple, sanctuary and shrine. During almost a century of s…

  • Skeuomorphism, Boundary Objects and Socialization of the Chalcolithic Metallurgy in the Southern Levant

    Open Access•Milena Gošić•ARTICLE•Etnoantropološki problemi /…•2015

Metalworking emerged in the southern Levant as a new ritual practice during the late phase of the Ghassulian culture, ca. 4300–3900 BC. Ghassulian metalworkers cast objects in both pure and alloyed copper. All the artifacts produced during this time span were ritual. The aim of the present paper is to discuss the socialization process of the Ghassulian metallurgy and its copper objects, by using the concepts of skeuomorphism and boundary objects.…
