  • Contesting control

Open Access•Steve Benford, Richard Ramchurn et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Computer Interaction•2020

As Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) engages with technologies that sense and actuate the body, there is a need to reconsider the human bodily experience. We present three case studies that each involve different forms of bodily experience: a breath-controlled amusement ride, a brain-controlled film, and an interactive musical duet with a physically actuated piano. We introduce a conceptual framework to describe how control becomes contested betwe…

  • I Seek the Nerves under Your Skin

Joe Marshall, Alan Chamberlain et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2011

I Seek the Nerves under Your Skin is a wearable audio artwork that is experienced by people running while wearing a special jacket and headphones. This artwork encourages people to run increasingly fast, pushing themselves physically and mentally, which mirrors the intense, crescendoing performance of a poet heard on the headphones. This article discusses the challenges of designing and deploying an artwork that is experienced at high speeds

  • Sensory Threads

Joe Marshall, Demetrios Airantzis et al.•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2010•References: 3

Sensory Threads is a pair of interlinked experiences, which explore the way in which sensing can give us insight into how our bodies are a part of their wider environment. Sensory Threads seeks to investigate what happens when wearables move beyond being technologies designed for individuals and are transformed into tools of ‘collective sensing’. It aims to stimulate participants' behaviours through their own emergent and unpredictable actions in…
