From Slavery to Precious Pearls
An oil painting currently titled “Portrait of a Lady Holding an Orange Blossom” acquired by the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto in January of 2020, has been subject to much discussion regarding the sitter, whilst the painter was quickly identified as Jeremias Schultz (1723–1800). It is generally acknowledged that it was painted in the early 1770s in the Dutch Republic, the northern part of the Netherlands. A plain Enlightenment portrait, it at …
Crazy train
This paper examines the impact of political and geographic polarisation on high-speed rail (HSR) projects in the United States. Drawing from opinion polls, newspaper articles and election results, this paper demonstrates that sub-urbanisation and the construction of the interstate highways have fostered a geographically polarised political climate that serves as a barrier to the implementation of HSR in the United States. In examining these facto…
The impact of different types of NHS expenditure on health
English data from 2003 to 2012 suggests that it costs the NHS £10,000 to generate an additional quality-adjusted life year (QALY). This estimate relates to all NHS expenditure and no attempt was made to explore possible heterogeneity within this total. Different types of expenditure - such as secondary care, primary care and specialized commissioning - may have different productivities and estimates of these may help policymakers decide where add…
Writing the Kingdom of God in South Africa
John de Gruchy’s The Church Struggle in South Africa was a bold attempt to write the story of the kingdom of God in his native land. While it stood toward the beginning of his written work, the themes laid down in it have followed De Gruchy’s writings up to the present. They have also sketched the story of South Africa from the climax of the struggle to end Apartheid to the present travails to realize its promise. This article takes up the final …

Competition and Inequality
Competition is often prescribed as an efficiency-enhancing tonic for ailing health systems. However, critics claim that competition exacerbates socioeconomic inequality in health care. This claim is tested in relation to the “internal market” reforms of the English National Health Service (NHS) from 1991 to 97, which injected a small dose of hospital competition into a state-funded, state-owned health system responsible for more than 90% of natio…
Sustainability, Systems Thinking and Professional Practice
This article explores the impact of the new sustainability agenda on the occupational and professional needs of those who have taken educational and training programmes in the environmental field at either undergraduate or postgraduate level or through relevant professional institutions' continuing professional development programmes. It also describes a one-day workshop for the professions on sustainable development, based on systems thinking an…
Educating Earth-literate Leaders
The World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg made it clear that political leadership the world over is incapable of rising to the challenges of sustainability. Yet, most of the hundred or so world leaders who attended have a higher education degree from some of the world's most prestigious universities. This paper tries to address some of the key challenges this poses for universities. It looks at the changing professional …

"This updated and substantially revised second edition, like its predecessor, integrates a discussion of the latest theoretical developments with a comprehensive review of empirical work. Designed for upper-level undergraduates and graduates in industrial economics, there are complete treatments of the basic oligopoly models that are the bread and butter of theoretical industrial economics (Cournot, Bertrand, and extensions; horizontal and vertic…

Coming to Terms
Coming to Terms is a groundbreaking consideration of a country's attempts to put a troubled history behind it and reach a new stage of development. Martin Meredith takes an unprecedented look into the key cases presented to the commission - both those involving well-known figures such as Stephen Biko and Winnie Mandela, and those that deal with the routine violence and torture that shaped the lives of average South Africans. In vivid narrative an…
Facing the Truth
The authors suggest new roles that faith communities can play in the search for truth and in the reconstruction of South Africa
Public Procurement Directives in the European Union
Prompted by the Single European Market initiative, virtually all public procurement, except for defence equipment, is now subject to European Union rules which prohibit discriminatory (buy national) purchasing policies. This paper examines the impact of recent procurement Directives on local authority tendering and contract award behaviour (compliance), and considers whether the legislation has been successful in opening‐up such public procuremen…

European community food processing industries
A review of market structure and firm conduct in European food processing industries, as well as the policies of Member State governments toward the movement of goods across borders, suggests that the pace of market integration in this section of the EU economy will be slower than sometimes predicted
The Impact of Uk Privatisation on Labour and Total Factor Productivity
Privatization programs have been introduced in a number of countries in the last decade with a view to improving the economic performance of state-owned industries. Yet empirical studies of public versus private ownership have produced mixed results. This study is concerned with assessing the impact on labor and total factor productivity of eleven major privatizations in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. The study is unique in identifying performa…

Improved Performance in Local Economic Development
This article examines the extent to which changing approaches to performance management have had an impact on a range of agencies responsible for local economic development programmes in Britain. It explores the possibility that the effectiveness of public programmes could be more sharply highlighted and incorporated in the performance review of organizations. It demonstrates that major improvements have occurred but that overall the planning and…
