New Upper Palaeolithic Rock Art Complex in the Tejo Valley, Central Portugal
This short report presents newly discovered Palaeolithic rock art panels within the Ocreza Valley (Lower Tejo River), central Portugal, comprising several engraved zoomorphic figures, including auroch and horse. Together, they substantially increase upon the previous headless horse found in 2000, and the style of the engravings is identical to Upper Palaeolithic open-air engravings from other areas of western Iberia, including the Côa, Sabor, Tua…

Archeometrical Characterization of Rock Art Pigments from Puerto Roque Open-Air Rock Art Shelter (Valencia De Alcantara, Extremadura, Spain)
The study seeks to unravel the intricate operational sequence involved in preparing prehistoric pigments for rock art within the Puerto Roque rock art shelter. Sixteen pigment samples were meticulously collected from specific figurative representations. Additionally, three ochre samples were sourced from the shelter’s soil. Employing a comprehensive multi-analytical approach, including Raman microspectroscopy, X-ray microfluorescence (EDxrf), Fou…
Building Archaeotourism Brands – A Literature Review and an Analysis of an Ongoing Project in Rural Areas
Although archaeological tourism celebrates the cultural richness of a country or a region’s history, a question rises – how can one design and communicate an archaeological brand with success for rural areas? Our ongoing project called TURARQ is trying to answer this question. This project seeks to address an observed gap in the literature – how archaeotourism can or should be communicated to the public, potential tourists, investors, and politic…
Pigment spectroscopy analyses in Maltravieso cave, Spain
Maltravieso cave (Estremadura, Spain) was recently the subject of ATR-FTIR spectroscopy of 8 figures (four hand stencils, a red horse figure, a black bull figure, a pair of black lines, and a pair of brown lines). These artistic representations are composed of different colors including red, brown, and black figures. The analyses showed that different naturally occurred material compounds in the cave (such as kaolinite) were used in the creation …
The rock art of Caraculo, Namibe province, Angola
Identification of organic material in Los Buitres 1 rock art shelter, Badajoz, Spain
International educational project “Nature and Society in Prehistoric Europe”
The history of prehistoric Europe is relatively short if compared to Africa
The relevance of watery soundscapes in a ritual context
It is becoming increasing clear that the visual archaeological record, as witnessed through those elements of the site that remain visible (in the case of Neolithic chambered monuments, the surviving stone architecture) is just one sensory element. For this short paper, and pertinent to this journal issue, we will focus our attentions on what Scandinavian archaeologist Joakim Goldhaln refers to as non-visual experiences and perceptions, in partic…
