Ancestral and chthonic cults at Tenos
This paper presents the material evidence from two neighbouring Early Iron Age sites at Xobourgo on Tenos, identified as sacred places, and comments on their religious character and evolution. The first, conventionally named the Pro-Cyclopean Sanctuary, has a purely mortuary character. It starts in the Late Protogeometric period with an ancestral cult on a pebble platform over an empty grave, continues with a number of pyre pits inside enclosure …
Xobourgo on Tenos
Xobourgo is a fortified settlement on the island of Tenos in the Cyclades. It was established in the Early Iron Age and it remained the main civic center of the island until the end of the Classical period, when a new fortified coastal settlement created about seven miles southwards became the principal center of the island.
Greece and the Levant in the 10th–9th centuries BC
Tel Rehov in the Beth Shean Valley, northern Israel, yielded 14 Greek (mainly Euboean and Attic) pottery sherds from the Late Protogeometric to Middle Geometric periods. This is the largest number of Greek sherds from these periods found at a single site in the Southern Levant in stratigraphic contexts. Since the Tel Rehov strata, well-dated by a large number of 14C dates, yielded some of the richest assemblages of finds from the 10–9th centuries…
A Cypriot Sequence in Early Iron Age Crete
Con…
Potnia figures and cults in early Iron Age Aegean and Cyprus

A Geometric amphora of the Attic-Cydadic belly type coming from the Eleftherna cemetery, decorated with three bands of concentric circles on the belly, offers an opportunity to discuss the problems of typology and provenance posed by this characteristic class of vases in the light of recent research. Amphoras of this type, having two or three bands of concentric circles, always follow the Attic style, but while the Attic origin of the amphoras wi…
