A Factor Analytic Study of the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities
S ummary . The anglicised version of the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) was administered to 89 41⁄4‐year‐old children in Stoke‐on‐Trent. Factor analysis gave some support for the construct validity of McCarthy's General Cognitive, Perceptual‐Performance, Verbal and Motor Indexes. However, no support was found for Memory or Quantitative Indexes. These results are considered in the light of previous studies of the construct validity…
The Effects of Headings in Text on Recall, Search and Retrieval
S ummary . This paper summarises the results from nine experiments on headings. The experiments centre on three main variables (i) the purpose of the task (recall, search or retrieval from familiar and unfamiliar text); (ii) the position of the headings (marginal or embedded); and (iii) the nature of the headings (statements or questions). The results showed that headings aided recall, search and retrieval from the text used in these experiments,…
The M C Carthy Scales of Children's Abilities
S ummary .— The anglicised version of the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities (MSCA) was administered to 89 4 1/4‐year‐old English children in Stoke‐on‐Trent. English 4 1/4‐year‐old norms are presented and compared to equivalent American norms. Results suggest that the use of the MSCA's American norms give an estimate of intelligence in English children which is higher than their American peers. There is a small but consistent bias in favour …
The Effect of Headings on Children's Recall From Prose Text
S ummary . One hundred and seventy‐five children studied a short passage in one of four conditions—control, passage with title, passage with headings in the form of statements, and passage with headings in the form of questions. The results showed that the passages with headings were recalled significantly better than the control passage or the passage with a title, on both immediate and long‐term recall (14 days later). In addition, low ability …
