The Stability of Children's Laterality Prevalences and Their Relationship to Measures of Performance
S ummary . A national sample of over 11,000 children, from the National Child Development Study, was the basis for a study of laterality prevalences, consistencies and changes from 7 to 11 years of age. Consistency and changes in handedness were related to levels of ability and attainment at age 11. Approximately 86 per cent of children were consistent in their hand preference from 7 to 11; and most children who changed were mixed‐handed at 7. Th…
Effects on Children's Divergent Thinking Abilities of a Period of Direct Teaching for Divergent Production
S ummary . Teaching procedures designed to improve children's divergent thinking abilities were administered to two classes of 9‐ and 10‐year‐old children, one formal and one informal, for one morning per week over a period of six weeks. Parallel classes covered the same material but without the emphasis on divergent production. The results suggest that appropriate teaching procedures can play a significant part in enhancing children's divergent …
Type of Mathematics Teaching, Mathematical Ability and Divergent Thinking in Junior School Children
S ummary . Tests of intelligence, mathematical ability, divergent thinking and attitudes to school subjects were administered to a sample of 265 children in their final year at three junior schools. The three groups were matched for social class, intelligence and time devoted to mathematics teaching, the chief difference between them being that in one school (School C) mathematics was taught by a discovery approach, in another school (B) by tradi…
