Developmental relations between math anxiety and arithmetic fluency in elementary school students across six time points.
Math anxiety is widely recognized as a barrier to mathematical learning; however, its causal relationship with performance remains a topic of debate. The present study examined whether math anxiety predicts poor arithmetic fluency or vice versa by applying both a traditional Cross-Lagged Panel Model (CLPM) and a Random-Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) to longitudinal data from 866 students in grades 4–6 across six measurement points. …
Math Anxiety and Its Relations to Arithmetic Fluency and Number Processing
The negative relationship between math anxiety and mathematics performance is well established. However, factors such as how math anxiety is operationalized, the specific mathematical domain, gender, and cultural context may influence this relationship. Still, these factors have not been considered together and the results in primary school students have been inconsistent. Thus, this study aimed to investigate how math anxiety is related to arith…
Engagement and burnout in the classroom – Crossover effects from teachers to students
This study examined the dynamics of students' school engagement and burnout (exhaustion, cynicism) in primary school, considering both individual and classroom levels, and how teachers' occupational well-being predicted students' well-being across one school year. Data from 679 Finnish primary school students (Grades 4–6) and their teachers across 73 school classes were analyzed using multilevel modeling. The results revealed that student engagem…
Academic writing workshop-ing to support students writing bachelor’s and master’s theses
Students seem to encounter various challenges when writing bachelor’s and master’s theses, indicating a need to support them in their writing processes. In this study, academic writing workshops for students writing bachelor’s and master’s theses were developed and investigated during three years of a participatory action research project. The study uses a more-than-human approach to students’ thesis writing to explore how academic writing worksh…
Validating the early numeracy teacher rating scale for preschoolers (TRS–EN)
The aim of this study was to validate a teacher rating scale (TRS-EN) for assessing early numeracy skills and for identifying mathematically low-performing 3- and 4-year-old children. Fifty-six preschool teachers assessed children’s (3-year-olds = 127; 4-year-olds = 145) numerical relational, counting, and basic arithmetic skills. Construct validity evidence through confirmatory factor analysis supported both unidimensional and three-factor (i.e.…
Reciprocal effects of mathematics performance, school engagement and burnout during adolescence
BACKGROUND: Transitioning into adolescence while simultaneously facing greater academic demands as the level of education increases often entails both academic challenges and general declines in students' school-related well-being. Still, however, relatively little is known about the causal relationship between students' academic well-being (i.e., school engagement and burnout) and their performance during the adolescent years. AIMS: This study e…
