P1-487 Combined influence of physical activity and Hip circumference on all-cause mortality
Introduction Hip circumference has been shown to be inversely associated with mortality. Reduced femoral fat or muscle atrophy in the gluteofemoral region in those with narrow hips has been proposed as explanations and thus, physical activity is likely to play an important role. The aim was to estimate the combined effects of hip circumference and leisure-time physical activity on all-cause mortality. Methods We used a prospective population desi…
The levelling off of the obesity epidemic since the year 1999 – a review of evidence and perspectives
The purpose was to investigate a possible levelling off in the obesity epidemic, by systematically reviewing literature and web‐based sources. Eligible studies and data sources were required to have at least two measures of obesity prevalence since 1999. A literature and Internet search resulted in 52 studies from 25 different countries. The findings supported an overall levelling off of the epidemic in children and adolescents from Australia, Eu…
The association between nutritional conditions during World War II and childhood anthropometric variables in the Nordic countries
The Nordic children were affected by WWII in terms of a transient reduction in temporal trends in height and weight, and the magnitude of this decrease was associated with the severity of the energy restriction prevailing in the respective country during the war. These findings warrant further studies of the chronic diseases associated with height and weight for cohorts being in their growth periods during WWII
Beer, wine, spirits and subjective health
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between intake of different types of alcoholic beverages and self reported subjective health. DESIGN: Cross sectional health survey with assessment of intake of beer, wine and spirits (at last non-weekend day), smoking habits, social networks, physical activity, body mass index, educational level, presence of chronic disease, and self reported health. SETTING: WHO Copenhagen Healthy City Survey, Denmark…
Familial predisposition and susceptibility to the effect of other risk factors for myocardial infarction
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To assess if familial predisposition to myocardial infarction (MI) is an indicator of increased susceptibility to the effect of other established risk factors. The study assessed whether a family history of MI modifies the effect of arterial blood pressure, plasma cholesterol, high and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, % triglycerides, diabetes mellitus, body mass index, height, smoking habits, alcohol intake, physical activi…
Cardiovascular risk factor profile in subjects with familial predisposition to myocardial infarction in Denmark
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To identify possible modifiable mediators of familial predisposition to myocardial infarction (MI) by assessing the risk factor profile in individuals without MI in relation to parental occurrence of MI. DESIGN AND METHODS: Cross sectional survey of the general population. The odds of an adverse cardiovascular risk factor profile in subjects reporting parental occurrence of MI versus subjects not reporting parental occurrence we…
Regional Differences in Intelligence and Educational Level in Denmark
S ummary . Intelligence test scores and educational levels of a representative sample of 71,768 draftees are reported for seven geographical regions in Denmark. Differences between the regions were found for both variables. However, analysis revealed that 92 per cent of the regional variation in intelligence test scores could be reproduced from the corresponding differences in educational level. These latter appear to be related to regional urban…
Intelligence test performance in obesity in relation to educational attainment and parental Social Class
In the population of 242,633 draftees examined in the Copenhagen area for the period 1956–77, 1143 were extremely overweight. Compared to 2123 controls, selected at random from the remaining draftee population, the obese had a lower educational attainment, even at each level of intelligence test score. Conversely, at each educational level, the obese did not differ from the controls in intelligence test score. When taking into account, by regress…
Educational attainment and social class in adoptees
The number of years of schooling and adult social class of 1417 adoptees are found to correlate with the social class of both their biological and adoptive fathers. For female adoptees the effect of both paternal social class values upon own social class appears to be mediated through the influence of the former upon years of schooling. For male adoptees, some residual direct correlations of paternal social class with offspring's social class, in…
