• Anxiety and verbal learning in typically developing primary school children

    Open Access•Phillipa R Butcher, Bernd G Heubeck et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2021•References: 44

BACKGROUND: Despite evidence that high levels of anxiety can impair Working Memory (WM) functioning, little is known about how anxiety is associated with classroom learning activities, which make high demands on verbal WM. AIMS: To investigate the association between anxiety and learning on a task which makes high demands on verbal WM. • Panas Models of Positive and Negative Affectivity for Adolescent Boys

    Open Access•Bernd G Heubeck, Erica Boulter•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2020

The measurement of affect is often of central interest in adolescent research. Very few studies have investigated the factor structure underlying adolescent responses to the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, with mixed results. Only two studies reported on the trait version: one in Florida, the other in Chile. This study compared a range of prominent models to capture responses from adolescent boys from grades 7 to 12 in Australia (N = 1431)…

  • Predictors of alcohol consumption on dates and sense of intimacy

    Open Access•Sonia Hiu-Lam Ip, SONIA H L IP et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2016•References: 12

The drinking culture in Western societies infiltrates many aspects of life, including early romantic relationships. This study investigated factors that predict drinking on dates and the impact of date drinking on feelings of intimacy. Regression analyses of questionnaire data revealed that expectancies, general drinking tendencies, and partner's drinking as well as their interactions with gender and ethnicity contributed to explaining alcohol co…

  • Ecstasy Use, Outcome Expectancies, and Sexual Risk Taking

    Open Access•Phoebe Proudfoot, Bernd G Heubeck et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•2011

Ecstasy has become one of the most widely used illicit drugs in Australia. This study investigated outcome expectancies as possible motivating and maintaining factors in ecstasy use and sexual risk‐taking behaviour. A sample of regular ecstasy users (N = 220) from Sydney and Canberra, Australia, was recruited for structured face‐to‐face interviews. They also completed an Ecstasy Expectancy Questionnaire. Seven of eight subscales significantly dif…

  • Observation of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity (ADHD) problems in three natural classroom contexts

    Open Access•Gerhard W Lauth, Bernd G Heubeck et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 36

Background. Observation studies of students with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) problems in natural classroom situations are costly and relatively rare.Aims. The study enquired how teacher ratings are anchored in actual student classroom behaviours, and how the behaviour of children with ADHD problems differs from their classmates. The authors attempted to broaden the usual focus on disruptive and inattentive behaviours to elucid…

  • A Short Version of the Self Description Questionnaire II

    Herbert W Marsh, Louise A Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Assessment•2005

Four studies evaluate the new Self Description Questionnaire II short-form (SDQII-S) that measures 11 dimensions of adolescent self-concept based on responses to 51 of the original 102 SDQII items and demonstrate new statistical strategies to operationalize guidelines for short-form evaluation proposed by G. T. Smith, D. M. McCarthy, and K. G. Anderson (2000). Multiple-group confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the factor structure based on…

  • Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Reliability of the Mental Health Inventory for Australian Adolescents

    Open Access•Bernd G Heubeck, James T Neill•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2000

Ostroff, Woolverton, Berry, and Lesko in 1996 examined the adolescent subsample of Veit and Ware's 1983 normative data for the Mental Health Inventory and recommended a two-factor rather than the original five-factor model for the assessment of adolescents' mental health. Analysis of a 30-item version with a new independent sample of 878 adolescents in another English-speaking country supported a two-factor model of psychological well-being and d…

  • An exploration into the nature, frequency and impact of school hassles in the middle school years

    Open Access•Bernd G Heubeck, Bernd Heubeck et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Psychologist•1998•Cited by: 10•References: 9

This study set out to explore the nature of hassles at school for students in Year 6 and Year 7 and to examine the degree to which these are associated with emotional and behavioural problems. Two hundred and ten students from 12 classrooms in Canberra, Australia, were surveyed to obtain reports of school hassles experienced over a 6-month period. There was little support for hypotheses positing particular gender differences. Instead, boys report…

  • Models of responsibility and depression in unemployed young males and females

    Open Access•Bernd G Heubeck, Berndt Tausch et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Community & Applied…•1995•References: 19

In line with previous research, unemployed youth ( n = 94) in Liverpool, Australia, reported significantly more depression and loss of behavioural/emotional control than their employed counterparts ( n = 87). There was a significant sex effect on both of these scales, and no sex by employment status interaction. Detailed interviews with the unemployed group provided the basis for assessing the importance of causal vs solution attributions for the…
