Attentional Mechanism Underlying Asymmetric Subjective Opportunity Cost Effect in Intertemporal Choice
The asymmetric subjective opportunity cost (ASOC) effect in intertemporal choice refers to the increase of an individual's preference for a larger and later (LL) option when the opportunity cost of the smaller and sooner (SS) option is highlighted compared to when it is not, while the individual's intertemporal preference is unaffected when the opportunity cost of the LL option is highlighted. This study, based on the attribute‐based models, inve…
The effect of ego depletion on intertemporal decision making
The token undermining effect
The mere token strategy, which adds a small reward (token) to an option to increase attractiveness, is widely used in the consumer field. However, we conducted six studies that seek to confirm the ‘token undermining effect’, where adding a small token to a sooner and smaller reward (SS) paired with a later and larger reward (LL) decreases the preference for the SS. The results showed that the effect persists across various choice sets, participan…
Toward a coherent understanding of risky, intertemporal, and spatial choices
Effects of emotion on intertemporal decision-making
Studies show that significant differences are found in intertemporal choice between people in positive and negative emotions. However, the mechanism underlying this effect is underexplored. This study aimed to reveal the process mechanism of emotions on intertemporal decision making on the basis of the single dimension priority model by using a process-oriented method-a visual analog scale. We conducted three studies, where emotions were induced …
Self-choice preference
People are more likely to make choices themselves than delegate to an agent, even when it may not be the most optimal decision based on a cost-benefit analysis. Previous studies have demonstrated that retaining authority and controllability might be the primary reason for preferring self-choice. The current study asks whether impairment of controllability associated with self-choice can increase the rate of delegation and whether there are self-o…
