Discriminant Function Analysis
Discriminant function analysis (DFA) is a data‐reduction technique used to make decisions about group membership, typically in naturally occurring groups. It can answer theoretical questions but has proved especially useful in applied research. In this chapter we provide an overview of DFA, describe two types of DFA investigation, its three main procedures, and discuss DFA's potential and its limitations. We then explain the steps needed for inte…
Speech development in preschool children
Emerging evidence suggests domain-general processes, including working memory, may contribute to reduced speech production skills in young children. This study compared the phonological short-term (pSTM) and phonological working memory (pWM) abilities of 50 monolingual English-speaking children between 3;6 and 5;11 with typical speech production skills and percentage consonant correct (PCC) standard scores of 12 and above (n = 22) and typical spe…

The development of visual search strategies in biscriptal readers
In visual search tasks, skilled adult readers of English process letters of the alphabet differently from other symbols (Hammond & Green, 1982; Mason, 1982). Less skilled (young) readers of English, and skilled readers of logographic scripts, do not show this differential processing across stimuli (Green, Hammond, & Supramaniam, 1983; Green & Meara, 1987). To test whether cognitive processing in bilinguals depends upon script combinations and lan…
Are visual search procedures adapted to the nature of the script
Letters are processed differently from other shapes in a visual search task where subjects have to decide whether or not a predesignated target symbol is present in a subsequently presented string of five such symbols. If the M‐shaped letter search function, which relates correct reaction time to target position, reflects an efficient strategy used in word recognition, it should be produced by skilled readers of English who also read a logographi…
Course design in higher education
When designing and implementing courses in higher education, we make decisions regarding the match between the educational objectives to be set and the teaching methods to adopt. These decisions appear to be based on implicit assumptions about the relationship between teaching methods and educational objectives. In this study we explored these assumptions with a two-part survey of the staff and students involved in three different undergraduate d…
