Return Migration as a Largely Male Phenomenon
Return migration is a crucial yet often overlooked dimension of the migratory experience. Recognizing return paths challenges the notion of migration as a unilinear, one-directional process, instead revealing the circular and continuous nature of human mobility. Borders and Mobility Control in and between Empires and Nation-States
In a modernist interpretation of migration controls, nation states play a major role. This book challenges this interpretation by showing that comprehensive migration checks and permanent border controls appeared much earlier, in early modern dynastic states and empires, and predated nation states by centuries. The 11 contributions in this volume explore the role of early modern and modern dynastic kingdoms and empires in Europe, the Middle East …
On Many Routes
On Many Routes is about the history of human migration. With a focus on the Habsburg Empire, this innovative work presents an integrated and creative study of spatial mobilities: from short to long term, and intranational and inter-European to transatlantic. Migration was not just relegated to city folk, but likewise was the reality for rural dwellers, and we gain a better understanding of how sending and receiving states and shipping companies w…
Gender and the “Laws of Migration”
Ernest George Ravenstein’s influential “laws of migration” argued that short-distance and within-country moves were typically dominated by women. We use census microdata to take a fresh look at the relationship between gender and internal migration in late nineteenth-century Europe and North America. We argue that there was a significant flaw in Ravenstein’s key finding on gender and that this flaw has implications for more recent scholarship of …

The analysis focuses on the effects of the level of wages and demographic pressure. We find support for a no…
