  • Scholia and marginalia as testimonia of earlier stages of the text of Lucian

    Luca Beltramini•ARTICLE•Philologus•2024

The rich apparatus of scholia and marginalia transmitted in Lucian’s manuscripts can prove of vital help for the constitutio textus of his writings. On the one hand, their ancient and stratified origin makes it possible that they preserve traces of an earlier stage of Lucian’s text, both directly, through explicit quotations of lost variants, and indirectly, through hints given in the explanations of lemmas. On the other hand, they may allow us t…

  • Nature, Landscape and Identity in Silius Italicus’ Account of the Battle at the Trebia

    Open Access•Luca Beltramini•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•2024•References: 11

This article deals with the fight between the river Trebia and Scipio the Elder in Silius Italicus’ Punica (4.525–703), notoriously based on the Homeric battle between Achilles and Scamander ( Il. 21.1–382). By means of a close reading of the geographical details of Silius’ account, this article aims at highlighting the peculiar role given to the landscape in this episode. By intertwining well-established epic topoi and historiographical reflecti…

  • When a Sophist Speaks of Sophists

    Open Access•Luca Beltramini•ARTICLE•Anabases•2023

  • Livius noster

    Gianluigi Baldo, Luca Beltramini•EDITOR•BOOK•Livius noster•2021

This volume gathers the papers of a conference on Livy held at the University of Padua, on the occasion of the bimillenary of the historian?s death (6-10 November 2017). The aim of the volume is to shed new light on lesser-known aspects of Livy?s historiography, by approaching his work from a broad and interdisciplinary perspective. The papers, written by established scholars as well as by younger researchers, span from classical philology to anc…

  • Livio e il Conflitto tra Generazioni

    Open Access•Luca Beltramini•ARTICLE•Histos•2020

    Open Access•Luca Beltramini•ARTICLE•Philologus•2020

The article proposes to re-examine the Lucretian formula naturae species ratioque (1.146–148 = 2.59–61 = 3.91–93 = 6.39–41), the meaning of which has prompted some critical debate. The examination begins from an analysis of rhetoric and argument in the sections in which the phrase occurs, with the goal of demonstrating that the meaning ‘rational vision of nature’ is more apt to the context and to Lucretius’ poetic and philosophical programme, whi…
