  • Designing ‘optimal’ sanctions on Russian imports

    Open Access•Simon Schropp, Marinos Tsigas•ARTICLE•World Economy•2023

Restricting Russian imports is an important instrument in Allies' sanction toolbox. Rather than arbitrarily choosing the set of targeted imported products and the level of import tariff increases (as is typically done in the literature), we follow the recent contributions on ‘optimal sanction’ strategies. We apply a workhorse computable general equilibrium (CGE) model, GTAP, in a way that enables us to endogenise the scope of sectors targeted, th…

  • Estimating the economic effects of sanctions on Russia: An Allied trade embargo

Open Access•Kornel Mahlstein, Christine McDaniel et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2022

This article contributes to the ongoing discussion on the use of sanctions as a coercive tool of international policymaking, focusing on the economic effects of the sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Using CGE modelling, we explore the short‐ to medium‐term economic effects of a possible trade embargo by Allied countries imposed on Russia. We consider the Allied trade embargo as a set of comprehensive trade sanctions that incl…

  • There Goes Gravity: EBay and the Death of Distance

    Open Access•Andreas Lendle, Marcelo Olarreaga et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2016•Cited by: 9•References: 31

We compare the effect of geographic distance on eBay and total international trade flows. We consider the same 61 countries and basket of goods for both types of transactions. We find the effect of distance to be on average 65% smaller on eBay. We argue this difference is due to a reduction in search costs; it increases with product differentiation and is higher when trade partners speak different languages, when corruption in the exporting count…
