  • Cloud Computing and Firm Growth

Timothy Destefano, Richard Kneller et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2025

Cloud computing has shifted how firms access IT away from investment in fixed capital to pay-on-demand services that facilitate remote and simultaneous use. Using firm-level data, we examine the impact of cloud adoption on firm performance and organizational geography with an IV approach that exploits cross-section and time-series variation in fiber broadband speeds as instruments. Cloud leads younger firms to increase revenue, employment, and pr…

  • The (fuzzy) digital divide

Open Access•Timothy Destefano, Richard Kneller et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 3

Differences in access to high-speed broadband between urban and rural locations are known as the ‘digital divide’. Governments around the world have committed to spending considerable amounts of money to alleviate disparities in broadband infrastructure. However, to date, there is limited causal evidence for broadband and firm performance with even less of an understanding on whether the effects are distinct between firms located in urban versus …

  • The Timing and Persistence of Fiscal Policy Impacts on Growth

    Open Access•Norman Gemmell, Richard Kneller et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2011•Cited by: 13•References: 41

The literatures testing for aggregate short-run or long‐run growth impacts of fiscal policy use quite different methodologies. The former generally focuses on temporary fiscal ‘shocks’; the latter typically have no short‐run dynamics or assume homogeneity. We use regression methods that treat heterogeneous short‐run dynamics explicitly within a long‐run model. Results suggest that previously estimated ‘long‐run’ growth effects of fiscal policy ar…

  • Financial factors and exporting decisions

Open Access•David Greenaway, Alessandra Guariglia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International Economics•2007

  • No miracles here

Richard Kneller•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2007

In this paper we consider whether the rate of growth following trade liberalisation differs significantly from growth in other developing countries. We find that it does not. Given this result we explore whether these growth effects are offset by changes in other policy variables, namely changes in fiscal policy. Governments increase welfare spending as a response to greater exposure to international trade. We find evidence that countries that li…

  • Firm Heterogeneity, Exporting and Foreign Direct Investment

    Open Access•David Greenaway, Richard Kneller•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2007•Cited by: 52•References: 73

A rapidly expanding literature on firm heterogeneity and firm level globalisation strategies has developed over the last decade. There are new insights on why some firms export and others do not, why some firms fail to survive in export markets and some choose to produce overseas rather than export. This article provides a synthesis and evaluation of this literature. It reviews both new theories of firms in an open economy context and the extensi…

  • Convergence in the Uk Service Sector

    Open Access•Sourafel Girma, Richard Kneller•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Bernard and Jones (1996) have previously argued that similarity in the technologies used by firms in the service sector helps to explain evidence of absolute convergence at the cross‐country level. This paper searches for convergence at the firm level using data for the UK service sector over the period 1988–1998. Initial mixed support for this view is partly explained by strong business cycle effects in the data. Upon closer examination we find …
