  • Covid ‐19 and global value chains: A discussion of arguments on value chain organisation and the role of the WTO

Open Access•Marc Bacchetta, Eddy Bekkers et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2024

We conduct an in‐depth analysis of the reasons for changes in global value chains as a result of COVID‐19 both from a positive angle, analysing expected changes in the behaviour of firms, and from a normative angle, assessing the different arguments for policy interventions by governments. The analysis generates three main conclusions. First, the COVID‐19 pandemic could contribute to diversification of sources of supply whose extent will vary by …

  • How will global trade patterns evolve in the long run

Open Access•Eddy Bekkers, Erwin Corong et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2024

In this paper, the evolution of global trade patterns until 2050 is projected with a recursive dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model. Feeding the model with exogenous projections on macroeconomic, demographic, sectoral and trade cost variables, the evolution of trade patterns emerges endogenously from the model. The approach is innovative in both modelling approach and exogenous inputs. GDP growth emerges endogenously in the model be…

  • Complexity, tacit knowledge and the scope for technological catch‐up

Open Access•Eddy Bekkers, Michael Landesmann et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2022

We study the determinants of sectoral patterns of technological catch‐up of emerging economies. In particular, we test the hypotheses that technological catch‐up is slower in tacit knowledge‐intensive sectors, operationalised by measures of complex task intensity, in sectors with a high skill intensity, with a high degree of export sophistication, and higher income elasticity. Employing trade data from United Nations Comtrade and production data …

  • Simulating the trade effects of the Covid‐19 pandemic: Scenario analysis based on quantitative trade modelling

    Open Access•Eddy Bekkers, Robert B Koopman et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2022

The WTO Global Trade Model, a quantitative trade model, is employed to project the impact on the global economy of the COVID‐19 pandemic. Because of the profound uncertainty about the duration of the pandemic and the containment measures, three scenarios are constructed, V‐shaped, U‐shaped and L‐shaped recovery, corresponding with a duration of the pandemic of 3 months, 6 months and more than a year. The pandemic and containment measures are assu…

  • Melting ice Caps and the Economic Impact of Opening the Northern Sea Route

    Open Access•Eddy Bekkers, Joseph Francois et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 53

A consequence of melting Arctic ice caps is the commercial viability of the Northern Sea Route, connecting North-East Asia with North-Western Europe. This will represent a sizeable reduction in shipping distances and a decrease in the average transportation days by around one-third compared to the currently used Southern Sea Route. We examine the economic impact of the opening of the Northern Sea Route. This includes a remarkable shift of bilater…

  • Local Food Prices and International Price Transmission

    Open Access•Eddy Bekkers, Martina Brockmeier et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 2
