  • How trade and investment agreements affect bilateral foreign direct investment: Results from a structural gravity model

    Open Access•HENK L M KOX, Hugo Rojas‐Romagosa•ARTICLE•World Economy•2020

We employ a structural gravity approach to analyse the impact of preferential trade agreements (PTAs), bilateral investment treaties (BITs) and other policies on bilateral foreign direct investment (FDI). We use the UNCTAD global database on bilateral FDI stocks and flows. To control for the heterogeneous nature of PTAs, we employ two different indicators of PTA depth. We find that on average signing a PTA increases bilateral FDI stocks by around…

  • Melting ice Caps and the Economic Impact of Opening the Northern Sea Route

    Open Access•Eddy Bekkers, Joseph Francois et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 53

A consequence of melting Arctic ice caps is the commercial viability of the Northern Sea Route, connecting North-East Asia with North-Western Europe. This will represent a sizeable reduction in shipping distances and a decrease in the average transportation days by around one-third compared to the currently used Southern Sea Route. We examine the economic impact of the opening of the Northern Sea Route. This includes a remarkable shift of bilater…

  • A Stochastic Indicator for Sovereign Debt Sustainability

Jasper Lukkezen, Hugo Rojas‐Romagosa et al.•ARTICLE•FinanzArchiv•2016

We propose a stochastic indicator to assess government debt sustainability. This indicator combines the effect of economic uncertainty - represented by stochastic simulations of interest and growth rates - with the expected fiscal response, which provides information on the long-term country-specific attitude towards fiscal sustainability. We apply our framework to postwar data for nine OECD countries and find that our indicator - the potential i…

  • Household inequality, social welfare, and trade

  • The Construction And Interpretation Of Combined Cross-Section And Time-Series Inequality Datasets

Joseph Francois, Joseph F Francois et al.•BOOK•2005

The inequality dataset compiled in the 1990s by the World Bank and extendedby the UN has been both widely used and strongly criticized. The criticisms raisequestions about conclusions drawn from secondary inequality datasets in general. Wedevelop techniques to deal with national and international comparability problemsintrinsic to such datasets. The result is a new dataset of consistent inequality series, allowing us to explore problems of measure…
