  • What if? The macroeconomic and distributional effects for Germany of a stop of energy imports from Russia

Open Access•Rüdiger Bachmann, David Baqaee et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2024•References: 16

This paper discusses the economic effects of a potential cut‐off of the German economy from Russian energy imports. We use a multi‐sector open‐economy model and a simplified approach based on an aggregate production function to estimate the effects of a shock to energy inputs. We show that the effects are likely to be substantial but manageable because of substitution of energy imports and reallocation along the production chain. In the short run…

  • Changes in the Distribution of Black and White Wealth since the US Civil War

Open Access•Ellora Derenoncourt, Chi Hyun Kim et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2023

The difference in the average wealth of Black and white Americans narrowed in the first century after the Civil War, but remained large and even widened again after 1980. Given high levels of wealth concentration both historically and today, dynamics at the average may not capture important heterogeneity in racial wealth gaps across the distribution. This paper looks into the historical evolution of the Black and white wealth distributions since …

  • Income and Wealth Inequality in America, 1949–2016

Moritz Kuhn, Moritz Schularick et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2020•Cited by: 18•References: 1

This paper studies the distribution of U.S. household income and wealth over the past seven decades. We introduce a newly compiled household-level dataset based on archival data from historical waves of the Survey of Consumer Finances (SCF). Complementing recent work on top income and wealth shares, the long-run survey data give a granular picture of trends in the bottom 90% of the population. The new data confirm a substantial widening of income…
