Structural Analysis of Nonlinear Pricing
This paper proposes a new methodology for analyzing nonlinear pricing data. We establish identification of the model primitives with a known tariff and characterize the model restrictions on observables. We propose a quantile-based nonparametric estimator that achieves consistency at the parametric rate. We introduce unobserved product heterogeneity with an unknown tariff and show how our identification and estimation results extend. A Monte Carl…
Asymmetry in Procurement Auctions
Differences in cost efficiency and productivity across firms may introduce asymmetries in procurement auctions. Relying on a structural approach, this article investigates potential asymmetry among firms bidding for snow removal contracts in Montréal. The empirical results show that firms located in close proximity have a cost advantage relative to other firms in the most urbanised part of Montréal because of prohibitive equipment storage costs. …
Semiparametric Estimation of the Optimal Reserve Price in First-Price Auctions
The optimal reserve price in the independent private value paradigm is generally expressed as a functional of the latent distribution of private signals, which is by nature unobserved. This feature has limited the implementation of the optimal reserve price in practice. In this article, we consider rst-price auctions within the general af liated private values paradigm. We show that the seller’s expected pro t can be written as a functional of th…
Timber Sale Auctions with Random Reserve Prices
This paper analyzes first-price sealed-bid auctions of standing timber organized by the French forest service, Office National des Forêts (ONF). A feature of these auctions is that they are held with random reserve prices. We consider an auction model with a random reserve price within the independent-private-value paradigm. After establishing the identification of the model, we estimate the underlying bidders' private-value distribution by using…
