  • Risk Selection in Natural-Disaster Insurance

Mario Jametti, Thomas Von Ungern‐sternberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2010

It is widely recognized that market failure prevents efficient risk sharing in natural-disaster insurance, leading to several public-private partnership arrangements across the globe. We argue that risk selection by the private partner is potentially an important issue. We illustrate our concerns with a simple model of reinsurance in a natural-disaster insurance market, based on the French system. Risk selection is a likely equilibrium outcome. N…

  • Swiss Auctions

Thomas Von Ungern‐sternberg, Thomas von Ungern-Sternberg•ARTICLE•Economica•1991

This paper studies a model of simultaneous sealed-bid multiobject auctions where the designated winner has the possibility of withdrawing his bid. It is shown that, when the bidders face rising marginal costs (a capacity constraint), the introduction of such a withdrawal option may lead to lower equilibrium prices. Furthermore, an increase in the slope of the marginal cost curve may lead to lower equilibrium prices

  • The Flexibility to Switch between Different Products

Thomas Von Ungern‐sternberg, Thomas von Ungern-Sternberg•ARTICLE•Economica•1990

In many situations of fluctuating demand, firms react by diversifying into several different markets. The use of flexible (non-dedicated) equipment implies higher costs for the production of one good, but makes it easier (less costly) to switch to the production of another. When flexibility is modelled in this way, the market will usually be characterized by the coexistence of a variety of different firms, some using (high-cost) flexible technolo…

  • Does the Swiss National Bank Stabilize the Swiss Franc Exchange Rates

Thomas Von Ungern‐sternberg, Thomas von Ungern-Sternberg•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•1987

The starting point of this article is the observation that many of the Granger-causality tests for policy effectiveness that have been performed are likely to be severely biased because of omitted variables problems. An alternative procedure that does not suffer from this handicap is proposed to test for the stabilizing effect of economic policy interventions. The procedure is applied to test whether the Swiss National Bank's monetary interventio…

mainly for the sake of simplicity. More important is the realization that markets do indeed differ significantly in the ways consumers can obtain information. In some markets there are brokers, test magazines, leasing companies, etc., which serve to alleviate the information problem facing the buyers. In other markets word-of-mouth recommendations and advertising are the only sources of information available. It seems reasonable to suppose that t…

by the quality of the information available to the players. In particular the analysis is designed to give some insight into the players' incentives to obtain an informational advantage over their competitors. Our interest lies mainly in understanding the economic structure of the problem, and analysing the interactions that occur among the players. We have, therefore, limited ourselves to the analysis of a model with quite restrictive assumption…
