An econometric model of the monetary sector in Indonesia
Aims to develop an econometric model of the Indonesian monetary sector over the period, 1969-80. Before such a model was constructed, the hypothesis that there is a causal relationship between money supply and the aggregate price index was tested, using quarterly data. The hypothesis of a causal relationship from prices to money was supported while the hypothesis of contemporaneous causality could not be easily dismissed. In the model, both money…
Poverty, Growth and Policy Options
The purpose of this paper is to examine and test the hypotheses whether the relationship between poverty and development is U-shaped or rectangular hyperbolic. While testing these hypotheses, other variables such as life expectancy, adult literacy rate and special country characteristics are taken into consideration. The use of international cross-section data of 34 countries on an essentially dynamic issue was made in the absence of time-series …
Differences in Growth Rates and Kaldor's Laws
where p is the rate of growth of productivity, q is the rate of growth of output, e is the rate of growth of employment, and a, (3, -y and 8 are parameters. Kaldor regressed e on q to support his conclusion that the slow growth of industrial productivity was due to a shortage of labour which prevented exploitation of economies of scale. He took the growth rate q of manufacturing output as an independent variable and regressed the growth rate of p…
A Stochastic Policy Simulation of the World Coffee Economy
The paper analyzes the structure of the world coffee market and suggests policies that stabilize the export earnings of coffee‐exporting countries. The major cyclical characteristics of the coffee economy may be explained by a simultaneous equation model, which considers the lagged response of supply to price. The most successful policies include the development of rapidly maturing trees and the imposition of a quota on exports, both of which are…
A comparative study of the production structure of the cotton textile industry in India and the USA
This paper attempts a comparison of production structures of the cotton textile industries in India and the USA, using the input‐output framework. There are studies of comparative production structures in an economy but a disaggregated study has not been attempted for a particular industry. Almost all studies of the international comparisons of production structure have revealed that there are structural similarities between developed and less de…

Market responsiveness of peasant cultivators: Some evidence from prewar India
This study attempts to analyse the responsiveness of Indian farmers to changes in profitability with reference to non‐food crops, such as groundnuts, cotton, jute and sugarcane, over the period 1900–39. Various types of adjustment and expectations models have been used. The generalized distributed lag models have been formulated and some special forms have been applied to study the behaviour of farmers. Both ordinary least‐squares and two‐stage‐l…
