Identification of the communication time demands of educational leaders
Email has become a prominent communication tool for principals. Although principals have reported benefits of communicating via email, they have also indicated that it has intensified their workload. Specifically, principals have indicated that they receive a large volume of email, which contributes to extending and fragmenting their workdays. From actual email records, this study examined how email contributed to principal time demands and time …
Train new principals like THEY work
Without proper training, the realities of leading a school can overwhelm principals. Specifically, the challenges of leading a school will test principals’ abilities to manage operations and implement effective initiatives. Despite knowledge of these demands, author Craig Hochbein writes that aspiring principals often engage in training experiences that do not align with principals’ work. Examining the intersection of housing and educational options in a regulated school choice plan
The study examines assumptions in 1 urban district’s regulated choice plan and explores relationships between school performance and housing options of economically disadvantaged families. We use linear regression, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and plot distributions to analyze a uniquely constructed database combining advertised housing voucher rentals with available school choices across designated zones. Results indicate that 10 of 13 zones of…
Teacher Migration: Extension and Application of the Population Ecology Model to Explore Teacher Transfers in a Reform Environment
This article assesses the association between the Title I School Improvement Grant (SIG) program’s personnel replacement policy and teacher employment patterns within an urban school district. Hannan and Freeman’s population ecology model allowed the authors to consider schools within districts as individual organizations nested within a larger organization. The data are drawn from employment records of 2,470 teachers who worked in 19 high school…
Childhood social capital and postsecondary educational attainment
The Students in Front of Us: Reform for the Current Generation of Urban High School Students
The implementation of education policies requiring the turnaround of persistently low-achieving schools has demanded reforms that will not only improve achievement, but also deliver results in a short period of time. To meet such demands, Jefferson County Public Schools educators implemented Project Proficiency (PP). Results from state-administered mathematics tests demonstrated that all participating schools reported substantial increases in stu…
