Indirect influence and divergent thinking as a function of member status and task structure in small groups
A laboratory experiment examined the effect of confederate status and task structure on group members' use of the confederate's problem solving strategies (private/indirect influence) and divergent thinking. Twenty‐eight three‐member, all‐female groups, with an experimental confederate acting as one of the group members, solved an open‐structured or closed‐structured logic problem. The confederate, randomly assigned to be higher‐, lower‐, or of u…
Lower‐Status Participation and Influence
Status hierarchies readily form in groups and , once established , limit lower‐status group members’ opportunities for contributing to and influencing group decisions . Recent findings , however , suggest that the type of task on which a group works may allow lower‐status individuals to break through power and prestige orders in a cooperative way while conflicting with ideas of their higher‐status group members . Are you Privileged or Oppressed

They present two mixed-methods studies to examine students’ preconceived notions regarding two terms associated with social justice education: privilege and oppression. In Study 1, the authors conducted a qualitative investigation of students’ self-defin…
The Rise and Fall of Power and Prestige Orders
The present study highlights specific features of group problem-solving environments (i.e., task structure) that may directly affect interaction patterns and status hierarchies in heterogeneous groups. We used a laboratory experiment to investigate the differential effects of ill-structured and well-structured tasks on expectations of specific status characteristics and on the stability of power and prestige orders in collaborative groups. Twenty…

This article shares some of the challenges in preparing suburban preservice teachers at a private college for teaching careers in urban schools. The author describes her challenges as an African American instructor teaching mostly White and female preservice teachers about multicultural issues in urban schools. Many of her preservice teachers resisted some of the issues regarding multicultural education in urban settings. In this article, the aut…
A Path to Social Change
College students from various institutions completed questionnaires regarding their beliefs about privileged and oppressed adults’responsibility for the onset and offset of social inequities, the emotions linked with privileged and oppressed adults’responsibility, and the behaviors that should result from the privileged and oppressed adults’ responsibility for social equity. A path analysis revealed two causal pathways. The first path starts with…
