Cognitive Assessment of Classroom Learning
Computer Literacy and Book Literacy
The computer, the most significant technological advance for handling information, is rapidly becoming an important tool for the literate person. The book, an equally significant device for thinking and communication, has long been the focus of formal instruction. The paper explores the role of the school in promoting book literacy and inquires into the lessons to be learned from the long history of reading instruction
Applying cognitive psychology to educational practice
The mind of the dyslexic
Some theoretical and practical ramifications of story grammars
The Reading Diary
THE READING DIARY is an extensive case history of instructional environment and acquisition of reading skills by 50 first-graders in 10 classrooms. The design includes four categories of datadiagnostic decoding tests, oral reading and comprehension measures, standardized achievement tests, and classroom observations. Students' performance on multidimensional decoding tests indicates a consistent pattern of relative difficulty over levels of lette…
The Effects of Surface Structure Variables on Performance in Reading Comprehension Tests
Priscilla A. Drum, Robert C. Calfee, Linda K. Cook, The Effects of Surface Structure Variables on Performance in Reading Comprehension Tests, Reading Research Quarterly, Vol. 16, No. 4 (1981), pp. 486-514
Learning to Read
A topic of perennial concern and debate is the task of teaching our children to become skilled readers. We need not recapitulate these extensive discussions in detail. The longevity and persistence of the arguments can be traced to several causes. Reading seems so easy and natural to most of us, almost like breathing, that it is hard to understand why anyone should have trouble acquiring this skill. A student's failure to become a competent reade…
A Proposal for Practical (but Good) Research on Reading
sources over the past several years (Templeton, 1969) . Literacy is no longer a luxury in this country; it is a necessity. Every child deserves a chance to become a skilled, competent reader. Our knowledge of the nature of the reading process and the acquisition of reading has increased noticeably over the past ten to twenty years, largely as a result of government funding of basic research on reading (Levin & Williams, 1970; Kling, 1971; Kavanau…
Reading and Mathematics Observation System
An Automated System for Discrete-Trial Research with Animals
A system has been constructed for the study of two- and three-choice behavior in animals, using either a free operant or discrete-trial procedure. An IBM-026 card punch is utilized to automatically program stimulus and reinforcement events, and to record choices and choice latencies. Eight Ss may be run simultaneously in the apparatus
