Marital Functioning From Middle to Later Years: A Life Course–Stress Process Framework
Little research has examined continuity and change in marital functioning from the middle to later years. We draw on a life course perspective and examine the influences of cumulative life experiences, personal characteristics, genetic markers, and stressful life events during the mid‐later transition on later‐life marital functioning. Although this theoretical framework is applicable to other types of close relationships and stressful life event…
The Long Arm of the Farm: How an Occupation Structures Exposure and Vulnerability to Stressors across Role Domains
We examine how the occupation of farming structures the stress experiences of individuals through the timing and placement of actions. Further, we show how occupations have effects that spillover into family and friendship relationships. We find that farming affects both exposure and vulnerability to stressors. Specifically, farm men are more exposed to financial and job-related stressors, while less prone to marital conflict, than non-farmers. G…
Education and Health in the Czech Republic
Researchers in the United States have found that education and health are related. This relation may be due to the better market position of the educated, their greater store of personal and social resources, and/or their healthier lifestyle. These three connections between education and health are tested in the Czech Republic with three waves of panel data. We regress self-reports of health and physical functioning in 1994 on multiple indicators…
Parental Support and Adolescent Physical Health Status: A Latent Growth- Curve Analysis
Applying latent growth curve analysis to a sample of 310 adolescents, this study demonstrates that level of and changes in observed parental behavior are liked to the level of and changes in adolescent physical health status, respectively, through adolescent perception of parental support. In addition, the level of observed parental behavior had a significant direct effect on subsequent changes in adolescent health status. The results provide evi…
Parents' Stressful Life Events and Adolescent Depressed Mood
The present study of 451 families living in the rural Midwest examines a mediational model of the relationship between the stressful life events experienced by parents and adolescent depressed mood. This model is intended to overcome two limitations in previous research on the relationship between parents' stressful events and adolescent depressed mood by 1) examining a mediating process involving parental mood and parenting behavior, and 2) usin…
Social network and marital support as mediators and moderators of the impact of stress and depression on parental behavior
Structural equation modeling was used with a sample of 451 2-parent families to test an elaboration of J. Belsky's (1984) model of the determinants of parental behavior. Results largely supported the model. Economic pressure disrupted parenting by increasing depression and undermining access to spouse support. Spouse support had both a direct effect on parenting and an indirect influence through depression. For mothers, spouse support moderated t…
Value Socialization and Peer Group Affiliation among Early Adolescents
This study examined parental influence on the values of early adolescents and the influence of adolescents' values on their choice of friends. The degree to which early adolescents identified with their parents and the parents' endorsement of two measures of conventional values were found to predict adolescents' endorsement of conventional values. In turn, adolescents who endorsed values oriented toward altruism were less likely to report associa…
Prediction of Present Participation from Children’s Gender, Past Participation, and Attitudes: A Longitudinal Analysis
This investigation examined the change in children’s participation and attitudes toward sport team involvement from late elementary school to the beginning of high school. A questionnaire designed to measure importance of rewards was given to all 5th and 6th graders (n = 238) from a community with an extensive sports program. Five years later, as 10th and 11th graders, 166 (71%) of the original group participated in the follow-up study. Factor an…
