  • Effects of the family environment

    Thomas S Price, Sara R Jaffee•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2008•Cited by: 7•References: 4

The classical twin study provides a useful resource for testing hypotheses about how the family environment influences children's development, including how genes can influence sensitivity to environmental effects. However, existing statistical models do not account for the possibility that children can inherit exposure to family environments (i.e., passive gene-environment correlation). The authors introduce a method to simultaneously estimate t…

  • The Limits of Child Effects

    Sara R Jaffee, Avshalom Caspi et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2004•Cited by: 28•References: 50

Research on child effects has demonstrated that children's difficult and coercive behavior provokes harsh discipline from adults. Using a genetically sensitive design, the authors tested the limits of child effects on adult behavior that ranged from the normative (corporal punishment) to the nonnormative (physical maltreatment). The sample was a 1994-1995 nationally representative birth cohort of 1,116 twins and their families who participated in…

  • The structure of language abilities at 4 years

    Essi Colledge, Dorothy V M Bishop et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2002•Cited by: 9•References: 37

Normal language development was studied in 3 10 pairs of 4-year-old twins born in the United Kingdom in 1994. Twins were assessed individually in their homes on a diverse battery of language and nonverbal measures. Rotated factor analyses indicated the presence of a general Language factor (L) as well as a general Nonverbal (NV) factor. Moderate genetic influence was found for both L and NV abilities. Bivariate genetic analysis estimated a geneti…

  • Genetic and environmental origins of verbal and performance components of cognitive delay in 2-year-olds

    Thalia C Eley, Dorothy V M Bishop et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1999•References: 2

The authors investigated the etiology of several measures of cognitive delay. Verbal (V) and performance (P) abilities were assessed in over 3,000 pairs of 2-year-old twins. Group-differences heritability for general delay (the lowest 5% of the V and P composite) was 35%. However, V and P delays considered independently showed large differences in group heritability (77% for V vs. 40% for P). Specific delays with comorbid cases eliminated showed …
