  • Vivid Memories and the Reminiscence Phenomenon

    Open Access•Joseph M Fitzgerald•ARTICLE•Human Development•2010

Autobiographical memory research has shown that, for the most part, the retention function for personal memories strongly resembles the retention function identified in laboratory research. However, there appears to be a reminiscence component in the retention functions of older adults. This reminiscence component is defined as an overrepresentation of memories from the adolescent and early adult years in the autobiographical memories of older ad…

  • Research Methods and Research Questions for the Study of Person-Perception in Adult Development

    Open Access•Joseph M Fitzgerald•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

There is a need to expand the scope of person-perception research in adulthood beyond the study of attitudes toward aging and the aged. Expanding upon Thomae’s general argument that we need to examine the perception of change and the influence of expectations on this perceptual process, three general questions are developed. These questions concern the identification of the dimensions employed by adults in the processes of interpersonal perceptio…

  • Personality Factors and Perceived Peer Personality as Predictors of Social Role Variables in the Aged

    Open Access•Cal VanderPlate, Joseph M Fitzgerald•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

The aging literature contains many references to the importance of both real and perceived personality factors to the aging process, but little empirical evidence has been gathered. The individuals tested in the present study were asked to indicate their past and present levels of role participation, present role involvement, and to respond to parts of a personality inventory under both a self-rating and a rating of typical peer set. The results …

  • Conceptions of Learning and the Study of Life Span Development

    Open Access•William J Hoyer, Margret M Baltes et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2009

Conceptions of learning have changed considerably during the past decade of psychological research and theorizing. Similarly, conceptions of development, traditionally understood in terms of organismic (active organism) or mechanistic (reactive organism) metaphors, have also changed. Recently, dialectical and ecological approaches to psychological development have appeared. A symposium was presented at the American Psychological Association meeti…

  • How Do People Think About Intelligence

    Joseph M Fitzgerald, Steven Mellor•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•1988

Two studies are reported concerning implicit theories of intelligence. The first study replicated procedures employed by Sternberg, Conway, Ketron, and Bernstein (1981). Factor analysis of importance ratings of intelligent and unintelligent behaviors suggested a simpler model of implicit theories than suggested by Sternberg et al. However, the use of importance ratings for examining implicit theories was challenged because the results proved ambi…

  • Nixon's Resignation and Death Rates

    Open Access•Cindy Marriott, Joseph M Fitzgerald•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1982

Two studies are reported in which death rates were examined to determine the impact of Richard Nixon's resignation as a cultural/environmental event. As hypothesized, in the first study a significant dip in the number of deaths occurred in Atlanta, Georgia in the week immediately following the resignation. An examination of subpopulations indicated that the phenomenon was strongest among those individuals who had no obvious familial support syste…
