There is a need to expand the scope of person-perception research in adulthood beyond the study of attitudes toward aging and the aged. Expanding upon Thomae’s general argument that we need to examine the perception of change and the influence of expectations on this perceptual process, three general questions are developed. These questions concern the identification of the dimensions employed by adults in the processes of interpersonal perception, developmental changes in the content of expectations, and developmental changes in the role expectations play in influencing behavior. Two conceptual approaches to person-perception, implicit personality theory and the concept of prototypicality, are explored as sources of methods and theory in the study of these questions
