A self-determination theory perspective of motivations for cannabis-related harm reduction behaviours
OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate an expanded and adapted version of the Treatment Self-Regulation Questionnaire (TSRQ) to assess the internalization continuum of motivation per self-determination theory (SDT) for responsible cannabis use and cannabis protective behavioural strategies (PBS). METHODS AND MEASURES: We recruited 1,196 college students (Study 1) and 1,409 adults (Study 2) who reported past-month cannabis to complete online surveys; a …
Indirect associations between impulsivity and alcohol outcomes through motives for drinking responsibly among U.S. college students
The aim of the present study was to conduct a preliminary investigation of the associations between facets of impulsivity and alcohol outcomes through motives for drinking responsibly described by self-determination theory among college students. Participants (N=2,808) were part of a multisite investigation of college student drinking across 10 universities in 8 states in the U.S. who reported past-month drinking. Results of a structural equation…
The Mediating Role of Sleep Quality, Regularity, and Insomnia on the Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences and Resilience
Assault-related shame mediates the association between negative social reactions to disclosure of sexual assault and psychological distress
These findings offer new insight concerning the intervening role of assault-related shame and highlight the importance of shame as a target for therapeutic intervention. This study suggests the need for future research concerning the role of shame in the etiology of PTSD and process of disclosure among survivors of attempted or completed sexual assault. Celebrity Worship and Religion Revisited
We administered the Celebrity Attitude Scale, Quest Scale, and the Age-Universal I-E scale-12 to 164 undergraduates from three institutions in the United States in order to compare their religious values with a sample of English participants obtained by Maltby, et al. (2002). Results showed no overall relationship between the tendency to admire celebrities and religiosity, as measured by Quest and the Age-Universal I-E scale-12. The mean of the 1…
Rape Myth Acceptance Impacts the Reporting of Rape to the Police
We examined the association between rape myth acceptance (RMA) and reporting rapes to the police. Situational characteristics of the rape (e.g., stranger attack, injury) are known predictors of reporting, but no existing studies have examined the association between beliefs about rape and reporting. In addition, most studies of RMA do not assess victimization history. Incarcerated women experience high rates of sexual assaults prior to incarcerat…
Social Competence in Children of Alcoholic Parents Over Time
In the current study, the authors tested the hypothesis that children of alcoholic parents (COAs) show deficits in social competence that begin in early childhood and escalate through middle adolescence. Teachers, parents, and children reported on the social competence of COAs and matched controls in a community sample assessed from ages 6 to 15. Hierarchical linear growth models revealed different patterns of change in social competence across d…
Motivation and Academic Achievement
The present study examined the relationship of personality, experience while studying, and academic performance. One hundred and seventy talented high‐school students (68 males, 102 females) completed the Personality Research Form (PRF) and recorded their experience via the Experience Sampling Method (ESM). The results showed that controlling for ability, work orientation, a PRF factor, was a better predictor of grade than experience. However, an…
