Identifying atypical change at the individual level from childhood to adolescence
Identifying change at the individual level is an important goal for researchers, educators, and clinicians. We present a set of statistical procedures for identifying individuals who depart from a normative change. Using Latent Change Scores models (LCS), we illustrate how the Individual Likelihood computed from a statistical model for change (IL) and from an alternative unrestricted model (ILsat) can be used to identify atypical trajectories in …
Evaluating Willingness to Pay as a Measure of the Impact of Dyslexia in Adults
While much is known about dyslexia in school-age children and adolescents, less is known about its effects on quality of life in adults. Using data from the Connecticut Longitudinal Study, we provide the first estimates of the monetary value of improving reading, speaking, and cognitive skills to dyslexic and nondyslexic adults. Using a stated-preference survey, we find that dyslexic and nondyslexic individuals value improvements in their skills …
Longitudinal models of developmental dynamics between reading and cognition from childhood to adolescence
The authors applied linear dynamic models to longitudinal data to examine the dynamics of reading and cognition from 1st to 12th grade. They used longitudinal data (N=445) from the Connecticut Longitudinal Study (S. E. Shaywitz, B. A. Shaywitz, J. M. Fletcher, & M. D. Escobar, 1990) to map the dynamic interrelations of various scales of the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children--Revised (i.e., Full, Performance, and Verbal) and specific marke…
Tonal Cognition in Pattern Discrimination
The development of tonal pattern discrimination was investigated in 24 college musicians, 24 college nonmusicians, and 38 children in first grade. Comparisons of the two college-age groups on three tests yielded differences in accuracy and speed that interacted with item type. Comparisons of all three groups on one test demonstrated that college nonmusicians were no more accurate, although they responded to some item types faster than did the fir…
Song Recognition among Preschool-Age Children
We sought to discover whether listening to songs over an expanded period of time would contribute to a greater integration of wards and music in memory among preschool children (3-5 years old). The following specific problems guided this research: (1) What are the effects of songs performed with and without texts on preschool children's melodic-recognition ability? (2) Do differences in meter and tonality have an effect on song-recognition capabi…
Criteria-Specific Rating Scales in the Evaluation of High School Instrumental Performance
The suitability of criteria-specific rating scales in the selection of high school students for participation in an honors ensemble was investigated. Three questions regarding criteria-specific rating scales were addressed: (1) Do they yield adequate measurement results? (2) Do they help judges discriminate among different levels of student instrumental performance? and (3) Which dimensions of instrumental performance are most predictive of total…
