In the Spirit of Kitchen Tables: A Conversation on Citation and Politics
This piece unfolds as a multi-voiced dialogue among members of a co-lab who work as scholars, artists, dancers, professors, and storytellers and span diverse disciplinary homes including sustainability, art, science and technology studies, and life sciences. We position citation as a practice of community accountability, aesthetic expression, resistance to erasure, and care for knowledge lineages. We ask: Who are we accountable to when we cite? W…
Abolish privacy
This is a manifesto to reject calls to “online privacy.” Privacy is an inherently exclusionary liberal entitlement inextricably linked to property, racial oppression, sexual control and class segregation. However online privacy is uncritically promoted by academics, activists and media discourse as a civil right and even a form of social justice. We build on the arguments of feminist, queer, Black Radical traditions and GDPR legal scholars to mak…
Initial Cognitive Performance Predicts Longitudinal Aviator Performance
These data suggest that longitudinal performance on an important real-world activity can be predicted by initial assessment of relevant cognitive abilities
Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitor in Combination With Cognitive Training in Older Adults
To determine if donepezil, an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor, improved the assimilation of cognitive training by older adults with memory complaints, we gave 168 nondemented, community-dwelling volunteers with memory complaints either 5 mg of donepezil (Aricept) or placebo daily for 6 weeks in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The dosage rose to 10 mg daily for another 6 weeks before a 2-week course of cognitive trainin…
Should One Use Medications in Combination With Cognitive Training? If So, Which Ones
In this article, we review current research regarding diagnosis of cognitive impairment in nondemented adults and discuss why medications and cognitive training together may be more beneficial than either alone. We also review potential cognitive enhancers and future research challenges. There are major reasons for such research: (a) Large numbers of older adults without dementia but with cognitive problems are not treatable with current cognitiv…
Cognitive interventions to improve faceame recall: The role of personality trait differences
Cognitive interventions to improve face-name recall: The role of personality trait differences
To explore the relationship of personality trait differences to the ability of older adults to benefit from an intervention to improve face-name recall, 3 previously validated methods of intervention were used in conjunction with the NEO Personality Inventory (Costa & McCrae, 1985b). Subjects were 156 community-dwelling elderly. The three treatment conditions all included a standard imagery mnemonic for remembering names and faces but differed in…
