A dual-component framework of interactive attention
A Dual-Component Framework dissociates cognitive expertise from affective engagement. • Custom game Vacillate isolates visual attention in split-screen navigation tasks. • Game literacy is a robust negative predictor of a unified Avatar Monitoring Index. • Expertise enables a sequential transition from foveal dependency to attentional efficiency. • Enjoyment predicts increased avatar monitoring frequency as a marker of affective engagement
Maternal postpartum depression impacts infants’ joint attention differentially across cultures
We assessed whether the negative association between maternal postpartum depression (PPD) and infants' development of joint attention (gaze following) generalizes from WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) to Majority World contexts. The study was conducted in Bhutan ( N = 105, M = 278 days, 52% males) but also draws from publicly available Swedish data ( N = 113, M = 302 days, 49% males). We demonstrate that Bhutanese a…
Attention during Visual Preference Tasks
This research examined how caregiver experience (female primary caregiver or distributed caregiving with mom and dad) influenced 10‐, 14‐, and 16‐month‐olds’ visual preferences and attention toward internal facial features of female–male face pairs, and how these behaviors related to novelty preferences in a face recognition task and speed and accuracy on a visual search task. In the visual preference task, infants visually preferred male faces, …
Caregiving experience and its relation to perceptual narrowing of face gender
This research examined whether infants tested longitudinally at 10, 14, and 16 months of age (N = 58) showed evidence of perceptual narrowing based on face gender (better discrimination of female than male faces) and whether changes in caregiving experience longitudinally predicted changes in infants' discrimination of male faces. To test face discrimination, infants participated in familiarization/novelty preference tasks and visual search tasks…
