  • The use of whole-genome sequencing and development of bioinformatics to monitor overlapping outbreaks of Candida auris in southern Nevada

Open Access•Andrew Gorzalski, Frank J Ambrosio et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

A Candida auris outbreak has been ongoing in Southern Nevada since August 2021. In this manuscript we describe the sequencing of over 200 C. auris isolates from patients at several facilities. Genetically distinct subgroups of C. auris were detected from Clade I (3 distinct lineages) and III (1 lineage). Open-source bioinformatic tools were developed and implemented to aid in the epidemiological investigation. The work herein compares three metho…

Introduction The clinical incidence of antimicrobial-resistant fungal infections has dramatically increased in recent years. Certain fungal pathogens colonize various body cavities, leading to life-threatening bloodstream infections. However, the identification and characterization of fungal isolates in laboratories remain a significant diagnostic challenge in medicine and public health. Whole-genome sequencing provides an unbiased and uniform id…

Rizki Febi, Febi R Ramadhan et al.•ARTICLE•Antropologi Indonesia•2022

Following the proliferation of digital media usage, the world has seen an increasing amount of digitally-mediated lives in everyday contexts. While anthropological scholarship has started to address this ever-growing subject, anthropologists are mainly preoccupied with human engagements in virtual worlds that have their own tangible and embodied sense of spatiality (e.g., online role-playing and gaming communities). In so doing, anthropologists h…

David J Hess, David Hess•CHAPTER•Routledge Handbook of Environmental…•2021

Environmental movements have a diverse set of goals and can have a wide range of outcomes, among which are changes in industry, technology, and science. These changes can involve the sunsetting of industrial sites, technologies, practices, or even entire industries; the redesign of infrastructures, products, and technological systems; and changes in scientific research agendas, methods, and problem areas in response to movement goals. Although st…

  • Can Bacteria Cause Cancer

David J He, David J Hess et al.•BOOK•Can Bacteria Cause Cancer?•2020

Growing numbers of cancer patients are exploring diet, food supplements, herbs, and nontoxic immunotherapies like bacterial vaccines as a means of therapy. Yet most cancer research organizations refuse to even evaluate these alternatives. Can Bacteria Cause Cancer? argues convincingly that unless this neglected world of alternative therapies is properly scrutinized, the medical Vietnam of the twentieth century may well affect one in two people by…

  • Corporate Monitorships and New Governance Regulation

    Open Access•Cristie Ford, David He et al.•ARTICLE•Law & Policy•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 19

Over the last few years, it has become increasingly common for government agencies to resolve corporate criminal law and securities regulations violations through the use of settlement agreements that require corporations to improve their compliance programs and hire independent monitors to oversee the changes. Based on our interviews with corporate monitors, regulators, and others, we find that these monitorships are failing to meet their full p…

Repression sometimes can lead to greater movement mobilization: repressive events that are perceived as unjust have the potential to generate enormous public outrage against those seen as responsible. One result of repression-backfire-can contribute to the understanding of the conditions under which some repressive events may become transformative for social movements. Three case studies that highlight the processes involved in backfire are exami…

Might a rapprochement be desirable and possible between the more academic and the more activist wings of STS? What can each learn from the other? A promising trajectory for this purpose may be to reinterpret and extend research in the constructivist tradition, building on recent work that appears to constitute the beginnings of a reconstructivist scholarly tradition. Some of the necessary work would be explicitly prescriptive: given that technolo…

There is a voluminous literature on the historical conflicts between advocates and critics of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for cancer. Although the older literature documents the suppression of CAM therapies and advocates, since the 1990s, the politics of CAM have become more complex and subtle. For example, suppression has tended to shift to a politics of integration, that is, of selective uptake of CAM therapies when used as adj…

    Open Access•David J He, David Hess•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1987•Cited by: 2

This Note presents an analysis of a heterodox science (parapsychology) in a Third World context (Brazil). In Brazil, there is a relative absence of the academic, secular parapsychology of North America and Western Europe, and instead the rival schools of the Catholic Church and the Spiritist movement structure and define parapsychology. Explanatory models involving boundary-work strains and interests help clarify the peculiar structure of Brazili…
