  • Rural bioeconomies in Europe: Socio-ecological conflicts, marginalized people and practices

Open Access•Jonathan Friedrich, Jana Holz et al.•ARTICLE•GAIA - Ecological Perspectives…•2023

Bioeconomy policies claim to contribute to socio-ecological transformations and decreasing rural-urban inequalities. Based on examples of four bioeconomies in rural Europe, we argue that contrary to these claims, such policies to date have not de-escalated existing social conflicts but instead have often further contributed to polarization tendencies. To live up to those proclaimed goals, bioeconomy research and policy need to deprioritize econom…

  • The more things change, the more they stay the same: Promises of bioeconomy and the economy of promises

    Open Access•Dennis Eversberg, PHILIP KOCH et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2023•Cited by: 5•References: 17

This editorial lays out the core themes of the special feature and provides an overview of the contributions. It introduces the main argument, namely that the promises of far-reaching change made by recent bioeconomy policies are in fact strategically directed at avoiding transformative change to existing societal arrangements. Bioeconomy discourse showcases technological solutions purported to solve sustainability ‘problems’ while sustaining eco…

  • Where limits to growth are tangible: The olive sector in Jaén and its bioeconomic future

    Open Access•PHILIP KOCH•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2022•References: 2

The olive sector in Jaén in the South of Spain serves as an example of what happens when a centuries-old bio-based economy reaches its biophysical limits. The Andalusian Bioeconomy Strategy seeks to reform the sector by modernizing it, i.e. investing in technological innovation and increasing the efficiency of mechanization. This paper first considers recent data on the olive sector in Jaén before comparing its historical evolution with the deman…

  • Social relationships with nature: Elements of a framework for socio-ecological structure analysis

Open Access•Dennis Eversberg, PHILIP KOCH et al.•ARTICLE•Innovation The European Journal…•2022•Cited by: 7•References: 25

This primarily conceptual contribution introduces a sociological framework for tracing the effects and the sources of stability or instability of societal nature relations to the thoughts, feelings and doings of actually existing people. Drawing on critical debates on societal nature relations, we argue that modern capitalist societalization is inherently expansionary, that the rapid expansion of human economic activity over the past two centurie…

  • Bodily Feeling in Emotion

    Open Access•Philip J Koch, PHILIP KOCH•ARTICLE•Dialogue•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 9

One might imagine that this remark of James was too obvious to be denied, but in fact current philosophical orthodoxy runs against it. Since the renewal of interest in the emotions produced by Anthony Kenny's Action Emotion and Will in 1963, philosophers have focussed primarily on the cognitive aspects of emotions-the judgments, evaluations, beliefs, presuppositions which they contain. Bodily feelings have been, on the whole, slighted. Sometimes …
